Dunno if you have seen this
might fill a few minutes of a wet evening
I see there is a new movie in the making with Colin Firth playing Crowhurst and Rachel Weisz as his wife.
Is this a clue, a hint? Have you secretly been pretending to sail around the UK – while really sitting in your living room sipping proper coffee with your slippers on – while making up your journey’s log entries and fooling us all? I should have seen through it when you mentioned a sunny day in Scotland, didn’t ring true at the time but I was too slow to realize what was going on.
Hope I wasn’t the only one taken in….
So who are going to play you and Mrs W in your movie? (Assuming the real Mrs W knows what you’ve been up to, otherwise there could be a lot of explaining…)
After years since first reading “The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst,” I read it again last week. The film brought a tone of sympathy and regret to the deception and the vanishing. Thank you for the link.
Thanks for that…filled in the story for me. Documentary was well done…
New movie

Hard to believe this sad story could become prime time movie.
W
my vote, timothy spall sans weight for mr D, and carole royle as the swmbo missus.
nice couple like the real ones. D on a tri? tried an old piver once, like canadian beer, ho hum.
peter, craft beer lover, opps wife too.
I was thinking Ricky Tomlinson (and perhaps Sue Thompson as they’ve worked together on the Royals), but the elocution lessons to pull it off may be too much. Timothy Spall could work, he knows what water looks like. No idea who Carole Royle is.
Who would play the children?
Interesting and very sad. Teignmouth and Shaldon have been full of 1960’s cars and lots of excitement a couple of months ago.
I was living in Shaldon as a young teenager at the time that Teignmouth Electron was doing sea trials and flitting in and out of Morgan Giles yard. The start was very low key but as reports cam back that Donald Crowhurst was leading excitement mounted. When the boat was found abandoned the local newspaper released the ‘welcome back’ issue they had prepared… It was very strange.
sorry if offended effendi,
in our local rag last fall, dapper Tim… “Looking good Mr Turner! Timothy Spall displays a slimmer frame at New York Film Festival”
only a great actor could play you…..
bonus his love of the sea.
there again l’m the only guy around here who bought his mobo cd.
I watched it. I read “A Voyage for Mad Men” a few years ago as well. The whole thing is so sad. Hard to judge harshly someone who tried so hard and risked so much to achieve something for him and his family.
Pity that time and tide undid him.
As for playing you…. well if we’re going to fictionalise might as well make up the sales volumes. I’m thinking what the American’s did to the taxi driver in the Luc Besson Taxi series when they/he re-made it for their market…
