Katie L – Rest in Peace – revised film

Katie L is easily the best boat I have ever owned - and I have had quite a few.  I bought her when the engine in the slug killed two summer's worth of sailing.  I decided that the next boat would have an outboard in a well and would be trailerable so that when I run out of money she can be brought home and the overheads cut to zero.

I was also keen on the gunter rig which is so easy to drop and looks great on the camera - at least that is what I think.

I had no idea that she would be such a brilliant little sea boat, that she would waft along in the faintest breeze and that she would motor like a little mobo.

After the first month sailing her I realised that she is the boat I will end my sailing days with - hopefully sailing the Blackwater until well into my eighties. I will then put her in the garden and sit on her until they come to take me away.

However, as a home for a month of more for me, Jill, two bikes and dog she is less than ideal. Living on her is like camping under the dining room table.

I will enjoy the Centaur and the places she will take us for the next phase of this little adventure - but I know that there are not many small yachts as perfect for my sort of sailing as Katie L.

I have several jobs to do to lay her up for storage. The trailer needs to be jacked up onto blocks, the tyres need to come off. Then the electrics and winch taped up into plastic bags.  Then I need to hang the spars up in the garage, put the cushions in the dry loft space, make a ridge for her and place the tarp over her.

Longer term I have to sort the sloppy centre plate, get rid of the play in the rudder, do the electrics, sand and varnish all the woodwork both inside and out, get some new sails, service the outboards and do something about the keels which are both in need of bringing back to metal and painting properly.

It is rather sad laying her up for such a long time  .....

but I shall soon fall in love with Lily M.

I made this little film in tribute to the best boat I have ever owned.

Don’t despair my friend, it’s only temporary. Once the Lily M is in the North in Fall 2016, you will get the itch to go sailing in the Broads or canal exploring in the Midlands over the Winter of 2016-2017. The joy of a trailer-sailer is the trailer — and the sailing. And with Katie L’s extreme shallow-draft, outboard well and shortened Riverine dropping-rig there’s plenty of inland rivers and canals to explore while the cold sleet and snow howls in the Scottish and Irish waters.

The universe is replete with inexpensive 4x4s and horse-box haulers that can be bought as tow-vehicles. Perfect for short 80-kph dashes across the country-side to interesting sailing waters, if only for a week or 10-day expeditions when the climate or work schedule contra-indicates driving hours-North to the Lily M. Plus there’s no harm in taking advantage of the occasional quay-side Inn or Bed&Breakfast for her Ladyship’s comfort instead of sleeping aboard.

No matter how long, it is only a period of hibernation. Sometime in the future she will have another spring and emerge anew to delight you all over again. Now there’s something to look forward to. P.

I would love a week on the Broads in the winter – and the trailer is road legal now

The Micra has a sport button – but I still think it would be a big ask to tow a 1.5 tonne rig

Got to spend some time this winter making films and pick up the narrative from Fraserberg onwards

currently on the desktop – it is very weird dipping back in time and then forwards thinking about Mylor

Another superb film. Your professional cameraman skills put your videos on a completely different level to others I have seen. And the winner of the 2015 Great British Blog Off is….Dylan Winter!

This is the equivalent of your Maldon back of the boatyard blog/current YBW threads. KatieL will sit under a cover unloved whilst you realise the Centaur is perfect for the Blackwater but you won’t be able to cut your ties with KatieL.
Do what I do; have three boats in commission and use them all, and feel very guilty if one doesn’t get used for a few weeks.

That will make a great “for sale” film if you do decide to part with her.
Made me thing about a gaff rig for my Swin Ranger, (should I take her to the Broads).

Thanks Dylan. Beautiful, poignant, a little autumn-sad, the promise of better things. And Ben Howard’s ‘Old Pine’! “Steady as the stars we stood ….”: a young bloke on an old bloke’s video – works well for me.

The feeling reminds me of when my favourite niece moved out to live with her spotty little tick of a boyfriend, anyway two years later its all over, she is back home and everything is hunky dory. Not that I am comparing Lilly M, More of a new mistress than a spotty little tick. Just remembered… my wife’s best friends daughter is called Lilly Mae, must be a good omen. Anyway Dylan, I wish you all the very best of luck for the coming winter. J.

I think this is the film I like best of all the ones you have made. Light weather sailing and sailing close to shore still give me enormous pleasure, and this film exemplifies that aspect.

One of the proper films takes a week to build

find the clips, spend some time researching the history, look for the stills, write the script, record it in a sound booth, put it into the time-line, mix in the music, edit the pix to the music, colour balance it, sound balance it, make two versions one of vimeo and one for youtube – bingo – job done – simps

I know you don’t really get on with Aurthur Rnsome but you KatieL reminds me of The first boat he had build, Racundra.

Sure it’s bigger 30′ but built in an era when that might have felt like a modern 25′ , the lower freeboard and cabin top similarities, as well as both have some quirky ness and are great seaboats.
It’s also fun that his first boat was called Slug too!

    Possible modern rig version.
