Right around Raasay

I have just spent four days on the boat and I think I am coming to terms with Scottish sailing. Hide when it rains, sail when it doesn't. I am also doing a fair amount of sailing using the spray hood and umbrella as cover during the latest downpour. The skies though are well worth the pain.

The wednesday was am utterly foul day

but by the evening it had eased up so I could go for a grey evening sail. On thursday I went for a day sail to Loch Kishorn which is due North of Plockton.

The Friday and saturday were just showery with the odd 25 mph gust so I had two splendidly robust sailing days around the Island or Raasay.

    Thanks for this Dylan

Was that your red jib being unfurled around 5 on Wednesday? If so you certainly grabbed the moment.

it’s good to see the boats in Plockton in close up – I usually see them from the train on my daily commute to Kyle. Ossian is well known to me – great go anywhere boat.

it’s not been much of a late season for you but v I mpressed that you’ve made the most of it given the nature of your commute!

50 per cent wetter this summer than average

no other red genoas around so it was certainly me

however, I am learning to deal with Scottish weather

sail when you can… I did not get off the mooring until late in the day

still it was a cracking good sail

Over the next few weeks I need to get off the mooring and onto a pontoon with power fairly soon – or throw in the towel for the year

currently attempting to get Kip to host me with a bit of a discount

what a great train journey you do each day then

  6. 5 September, 2016 at 10:41 pmSteve Proudfoot says:

Sure is a great journey and I even get paid for doing it!

Best of luck with Kip – have you tried Croabhaven for a price? sheltered waters for late /early season but a longer drive

just got to get out there. Now that I have cut my alcohol consumption to one drink a day time stormbound tends to drag more than it ever did. In dunstaffnage marina two days of rain would have the bottle dump spilling out into the car park. It was like the bins after new year. The last three day storm there were around 20 boats in harbour with dinghies behind waiting for the rain to stop. What I really need for scotland is one of these.

I will startr posting the half hour films in October at the rate of about two a month and run through until April or so. That is when we all need reminding that sailing is a marvelous thing.

Some of those would make quality desktop images. In fact, one or two of them just might make it on to mine… copyright permitting, of course! What’s the licence?

    it is all free

copyright is dead….. hence the KTL model of extorting pensions from old blokes

Please, please stop telling people Westerly Nimrods are good as I am trying to buy either a Nimrod or Shipmate Senior. Your waxing lyrical about the Hunter Minstrel has already pushed them out of reach for us retired chaps ?
    Steve

  14. 8 September, 2016 at 12:41 amdylan winter says:

I think you overestimate the influence of KTL – however, both the Nimrod and the Shipmates are excellent little yachts.

A Fisher 25, defiantly the sort of think you want. Almost no bilge keel versions as far as I know. Colvic made something similar and lower priced.
I like the older LM boats too but pricey.

I took the plunge and went for a Shipmate Senior. Travelled 170 miles to look at a Nimrod first the owner had omitted to say the bottom of the mast had been broken off and replaced by shoving a piece of wood in its place! The Western Isles are magnificent – enjoy.

  18. 21 December, 2016 at 9:41 pmdylan winter says:

excellent choice of yacht = they look better than the Nimrod
