When it’s good it’s very very good, but when it’s bad it’s horrid.

Has the bolt to hold your tiller up sheared off? The one on Chiron next to the split pin/washer was a good bit taller than yours. I had to wind it out a bit to lift the tiller and stop the tiller pilot jumping off on full left rudder.

    it has sheared off

I am worried about what will happen when I drive the split pin out

    – will the rudder drop off?

I wouldn’t touch it until you are ashore or dried out somewhere. If you tighten the pinch bolt up across the back you may find the tiller will stay in which ever position/height you like.

Naaa, that is just holding the rudder stock on. That collar lower down with the very important pin through it is stopping the rudder dropping out.

I think you would have to remove both at the same time to drop the rudder out.

Not to be used for navigation though, I’ve not had it in bits.

Can’t you get a socket on the nut to remove it in situ? If the remains of the bolt don’t come with it you may get a long nut to put on to hold a length of screwed rod.

I have to undo that split pin and get the washer off – then I can turn the nut. But I am still worried that something will drop.

You could put her on the beach outside kip and try it. If it goes tits up it will only drop a bit. I know you have to dig a big hole to take the rudder off to swap the bearings.

The thing is, it won’t drop if you leave that travel limit collar on.

I agree with Aquaplane. The bolt through the travel limiting collar is the important one. My rudder did not drop out when I removed the split pin.

I recently took the rudder out of my Pageant which uses exactly the same parts, and the others are right, it’s the bolt through the lower ring which stops the rudder dropping out. The tiller clamp is just sitting on the top of the shaft so you can take it off without any problems.

excellent chaps – I had the pin straightened out, the long nose pliers in one hand, the hammer in the other and then I chickened out. Next time I will grasp the nettle in both hands and remove the split pin.

I know there is lots of scope up west but in winter the Clyde offers some lovely sheltered sailing water to explore

You could get a nice wee flat on the North side for some very sensible money. This one is in Toward. Nice views and a local yacht club nearby with winter storage ashore

you can winter on the east coast. I’m sure a nice flat down there would be similar money :)

Mud is good, much cheaper when you get it wrong.
