I last used the place back in my E boat days when I towed the boat up here for the National championships back in the 80's.
At the time it was run by the local council. The place was built in 1916 as a naval base and during world war 2 it was home to a fleet of minesweepers.
Port Edgar has a brilliant slip, wide and gentle and generous. You can see the old rail lines where they used to bring the minesweepers ashore for maintenance. I like the buildings at Port Edgar. Nissan huts, corrigated iron edifices and further along the shore some old navy barrack blocks. My old school was a naval base during the war so the architecture makes me feel very much at home.
The journey up the Forth on Monday was lovely and there are so many great harbours here - I might spend longer on this coast than I expected. The marina is a short bus ride into Edinburgh - so there is plenty for us to do when the weather is less than perfect.
The place is now in the hands of Russell who runs the local chandlery and boat repair yard and he is really turning the place around. The shower blocks are warm and clean. I also like the fact that there is a sailing school here so there are lots of high energy young people all over the place and the club holds regular dinghy races.
The marina nestles between the Forth Bridges. They are a bit rattly but I like the look of them and after a day or so there you no longer hear the sound of the trucks and the trains rattling quietly in the distance.
The pontoons are all deep water and the marina is surrounded by mud so there are lots of birds to watch. All round a most excellent baser for Katie L for a while.
It was a Royal Navy base between 1916 and the seventies. For a while it was home to a fleet of minesweepers
The Forth rail bridge dominates the skyline
Today it is a large fully serviced marina
The new road bridge is currently under construction
Lots of interesting modest yachts around the place
