Dutch Snaps

Peter is a KTLer, keen winter sailor and a Dutchman. As you know, I love snaps in my inbox and he sends me some real corkers. I had no idea Dutch boats were so amazing.

Peter has a great eye for a good boat - if you want to know more about specific pix I am sure he will respond on here

I think that some of the owners prefer the yard time and admiration to the sailing. They deserve the admiration…. marvelous boats

Pseudo pic 17-18, could not find the utube video of the Dutch barges racing and pushing so hard they capsize! Really !
Fortunately they are in shallow inland water!

    Dylan,
I’m amazed! You sailed on the East coast for years and never heard or saw anything about the Dutch equivalent of our East coast smacks, bawleys, Thames barges etc.? That’s what racing does for you, I dunno.

I knew they existed but not in such large numbers

Brightlingsea had a couple of barges and few smacks but Holland appear to have lots of boats

and I have never seen the clog boat – which is a really cute little thing

I probably had an advantage sailing out of Downs Road Boatyard for years. You couldn’t help but get caught up in the old gaffers thing. And I’ve always taken an interest in “classic” working boats and gaffers even though I sailed Wharram cats most of the time. The first boat I sailed was a gunter-rigged “Whippet” on the Broads.
I went to Holland once on a friend’s boat. We did some of the canals – Ghose (sp?), Middleburgh etc. My main memories are of beautiful and expensively fitted-out Dutch boats and seriously good Indonesian take-aways.

It’s from an older movie but the competition is no less exiting, these days. Search youtube for ‘Skutsjesilen’ if you want to see more recent competition.

I remember how wonderful Holland was for sailing when I went there as a seventeen year old and again as a 30 year old in an Arpege and Centaur respectively. A wonderful country for sailing, food, spirits and companionship. However some of the commercial shipping was very intimidting with the wake they create!

must try and find the full film.
we always called the dutch barges Bottas but later we discovered there were as many variant as a there are for english sailing fishing and cargo boats.

the little ones like photo 6 are called Grundels I think. my parents rented one for a week about 15 years ago , all steel, it was a bit small compared to their own boat but a lot of fun.
there is all sorts of inland sailing a bit like the boards with out as many plastic rentals (or it was years ago!)
I remember Sneek Friesland was the center of a great area to go.
It would be a perfect place to do a boat swop with somebody save the hassle of sailing over there etc.

And they have great boat designers in the Netherlands as well.
Koopman Sr. is very known. I own a Breehorn 37, fabulous boat.
