    Another interesting film.
Loved the chapel, the string of gulls and the lupins.
The lupin man was flying the Union Flag and the Norwegian Flag..not a Saltire in sight!

A lovely vid I thought, nicely paced with bits of history (not too mangled), local interest, scenery, sailing and sunsets.
    Tapped.

It is such a lovely place to sail

I would love to go back in a heatwave

    the beaches are fabulous

    Flat water

    lovely wildlife

Thanks again Dylan, marvellous video as usual. You are a very talented man. I’m so glad there’s so much coastline left for you to show us!

  5. 8 February, 2016 at 1:55 pmdylan winter says:

    Thanks Jack
there is a lot of coast to enjoy
although I would love to go back to Scapa when the light is good
we were not best served by the weather
but I still thought it was a brilliant place to sail
The Old Centaur was really flying along at times

We were exploring there (shoreside) just a few days ahead of you. Like you we loved the area and greatly admired the chapel. It was certainly cold all the time we were on Orkney but as you have shown in this latest video, it is a great place for boats and sailing. Thanks Dylan. P.

  7. 8 February, 2016 at 4:47 pmdylan winter says:

The trouble with being a sailor is that wherever you go by the coast you see the sea and you think that I would rather be on the boat looking at the land than be on the land looking at some-one else in a boat

or even worse… a great place to sail and no boats to be seen.

Very much enjoyed the film, it brings back the memories from our (me and wife) visit to the Orkneys just a few weeks before your cruise around the islands.

That WAS summer. It was hot in London at that time, when I was there, and I am an Aussie

Hi Dylan, Another superb video which brought back lots of memories of our trip across Scapa Flo on 14th June last year. We were impressed with the nice new moorings in Long Hope, and after a secure night we took off through the Pentland Firth to Wick and down the east coast to Hartlepool. Magic times! Can’t wait for the next instalment.
    Best Regards
    Rob

Scapa Flow is such a brilliant place to sail – I feel privileged to have sailed there

  14. 8 February, 2016 at 10:08 pmRiley Morgan says:

Well 27 degrees in London, 18 degrees at John o Groats ,so it really dropped off over a short bit of sea.

Great work Dylan, but so unfair, you get to do all this sailing!

  16. 8 February, 2016 at 11:15 pmdylan winter says:

that film was all one day sailing

a long northern summer day though

    spent four days editing it

    jealous of myself at times

it is such a splendid place to sail

there is a bloke there with a fast cat – must have had some amazing sails

going down to the boat in the morning

    sailing weds/thursday

The Orkney’s and Scapa Flow remind me of the uplifted terraces of our Point Reyes National Seashore –

A bit chillier, given it was summer, though.
But then Sam Clemmens called the San Francisco summer the coldest winter he’d ever encountered.

A fun adventure. enjoyed the conversation with the lupine bloke. A Robert Gibbings type of encounter.

Dylan! One of the best films yet – love the knack you have of continuing the narrative from on location to the studio and back. Means you’ve been thinking ahead – what next? Storyboarding??

Great stuff, not much sun, but very long days and great light at times I should imagine.

    Thank you.

Another belter Dylan. thanks. Sailed there a few years ago and was moved when we were over Royal Oak as you could see the bunker oil still floating to the surface on a still day.

Watching this latest instalment of Dylan’s Odyssey I was reminded of Ernest Cox. A few years ago my Father in Law lent me a book, it was called “The Man Who Bought a Navy” and was the story of Ernest Cox, who acquired the rights to salvage the German High Seas Fleet after it was scuppered in Scapa Flow. Its a fascinating and awe-inspiring tale of men with imagination and determination, in equal measure. A quick glance at a well-known on-line retailer shows a couple of other books on the subject – and highly-rated they are too.

watch this space – it was an amazing operation – a man who showed no fear when presented with an impossible job

They have been looking for a perfect place to run a sailing event, need smooth water , plenty of reliable wind, lots of viewing places from the shore, deep water and large docks , cheap construction costs for workshops , sail lofts and the like. sounds perfect, what’s not to like?
Anybody have the number for the America’s Cup organizers?
who needs the sun, sea, sand and surf of Bermuda!

you have the germ of an idea – and one that could earn us a great deal of money

no problems that could not be overcome by donning an extra layer

on your behalf I have just bought 300 yards of quay space for you

it comes with a jetty – some small repairs needed

    bring a hammer
