KeepTurningLeft Season 7 part 7 Newtown Creek to Beaulieu River

Newtown Creek made me look at the Solent in a completely different way. While the East end is a bit frantic the West end is a different kettle of fish and can be a very peaceful place to be

Each of these films takes about three weeks to edit. I have 12 more films in the can before I run out of material. These films will cover the West Coast of Shetland including Scalloway, the rough nightime crossing of the Pentland Firth, down to Loch Eribol, around Cape Wrath which was a pussycat that day, down the North Minch to the Summer Isles, to the amazing Handa,Loch Drambuie, Salen, Tobermory, the sound of Mull, CorryVrekan, Craobh, through the Crinan canal and the Clyde to Glasgow - and a few more places along the way.

If I am to re-boot the series with a boat that can keep me, the camera gear and my clothes dry and warm I need to average £2K per film - or about a third of the money that the bikini sailors earn per Week. Thanks for considering helping that happen

Lovely Dylan. Have moored just to the first stretch on the river, arriving at dusk. At dawn the harbour master arrived for his fee so no way to avoid it.. btw how much do they charge now?

With so many other beautiful places to sail why bother with a place that you already know is over-crowded and over-priced? I would have liked it better if you had spent the time exploring more of Newtown Creek.

there is a terrible answer to this

It is because there are lots of boats there, lots of owners. People always look to see what travel writers have said about their own patch. The same with video.

It does feel like a river compromised by too many moorings and jetties. I still think it worth seeing – just for the record.

I am hoping that the people who see my film about the river will then start to follow the rest of the journey

I love the Beaulieu river – even though it is extraspensive… You didn’t give Buckler’s Hard a name check which is a pity because I just love the name, redolent of tough old time pirates. I wonder if we get swashbuckler from it…

Also the pub there, the ‘Master Builders’ is worth a mention. On a summer’s day you can sit there on the lawn enjoying a very reasonable barbeque watching the maritime world go by. It doesn’t require a great stretch of the imagination to picture the great 19th century men o’ war lying in the docks under construction there. There is a swanky hotel, but you can ignore that.

Although you criticise Lord Beaulieu, I suppose we can thank the family for the preservation of the river from the over-development which is rife elsewhere along the Solent. And he does have the redeeming feature of being very interested in great old cars.

    and there we differ

he has not protected the river from over development

it is a linear boat park with moorings stretching in an uninterrupted line from the first bend to the last

way too many private jetties with security cameras and ugly gates jutting out into the river and restricting access for other users.

    As for liking old cars

You have a very interesting viewpoint on life which seems to be the whole world owes you something and you should be the only person in the world allowed to enjoy the water. If you think somewhere is too busy then bugger off and there will be one less boat in the crowd. Eventually it will just be me !

Of course single occupant boats are rather greedy in terms of boats on the water per people enjoying the environment.

The irony of you moaning about having to pay to use a mooring buoy which someone else provides and maintains juxtaposed against a click button suggesting I pay for watching your video wasn’t lost on me. Similarly the jetties which “prevent people enjoying the river” aren’t a natural phenomenon. Like the mooring buoy they wouldn’t be there were it not for the people you despise. As it happens some of the facilities on the river are club rather than privately owned and encourage access to many people for modest cost.

How you can justify trying to moniterize videos on a free hosting platform is beyond me. I share mine for free !

Keep smiling you grumpy old goat.

We too pay for Vimeo for one of the businesses but in the general scheme of things….

Now the video of the bikini clad rave bunnies aboard their 53 footer. That is something worth contributing to !

It’s a lovely part of the world and we are fortunate to be able to enjoy it aboard anything that floats. I love the off season when you have the place to yourself but in the summer you meet some great people and the sun shines. I would hold both Newtown and Beaulieu up against the rest of the world has to offer.

Waking up on a still morning in either is exquisite.
