From giant sea lice to Norwegian Heroes in the space of half an hour…….. it could only happen on KTL!
Loads of stuff I had no clue about ……can’t say you don’t do your homework Dylan !
When the light came good the shots of the cliffs were absolutely amazing, with the relife in such detail makes watching in HD on the big telly a must ….and then the eerie bird calls at the end…….Oooeeeerr!
Or was it the Kelpie ??
Keep it going eh?
Cheers
Thank you for more classic footage which clearly shows what an excellent sailing area this is…….. when the weather co-operates. Harmony’s sails set very well….. I know the red genoa has followed you to Lily M…… will you keep it for the future or does it have to go when you find a buyer? It’s a fine sail, I hope you hang on to it. P.
Ooooh I hope so. The engine well idea was a wonderfully entertaining creator of vexed correspondence. P.
I’m struggling for words to describe the huge pleasure and the emotional connection your ‘sailings’ give me. And I bet to so many others. I check each day to see if the next venture is posted. Raconteur, historian, camera-man supremo–you are an inspiration Mr Winter!! Bless you.
Great entertainment — thanks Dylan. Have tapped using my real name as usual (I’m in disguise). By the way, the Youtube version says, “This video is unlisted. Be considerate and think twice before sharing.” The only way you can watch it there is by using the link here…
D,
Another outstanding bit of film. You are quite getting the hang of it, lol. It’s like having a film crew on one’s journey without the bother. Did you climb the Ronas hill at Voe and put your name in the book at the top? I think my fastest ever was the sound between Jura and Islay with a spring tide, 11 point something knots………
Ah, I get it now — thanks for the explanation. I had to go and watch the Youtube version with the advert and admit I found it very entertaining, particularly the soap-bubble analogy. Good luck with selling your well-found and newly-painted boat.
Brilliant work Dylan! Loved the comments around 19:20! I think you should ask the BBC for a fair share of the licence fee that all your followers are undoubtedly paying (under duress in my case). So you consider your grey haired PayPal tappers as being ‘Patrons of the Arts’.? I do like the idea of that. Feeling all warm and gooey…
You sound alarmingly close to selling up – a dreadful prospect, but if you must…
Small consolation but we had a tremendous sail up the Sound of Islay a couple of years ago in the Wayfarer and back through Corryvreckan a few days later. LOA 15′ 10″ – just saying :)
All the best!
Is there any merit in re-mixing the early years into hour-long episodes and selling them off from here? I’ve tried to watch them all but they seem to wander between platforms (Vimeo/Youtube etc) and no-one wants a DVD nowadays.
I also think there’s mileage in using Many Others Boats to complete the portions of the circuit that you don’t want to drag Katie L to or that you don’t think she’s up to. I think Most Old Blokes would be quite proud to see their old boat get a run out and 15 minutes of internet fame in the hands of a skilled sailor and cameraman.
Jon
Ah, Raasay, did you meet Paul Camilli of “end of the road(Callum’s road) fame? Where was the rock, cos the chart and the plotter are about 20 meters adrift? Had a moment there myself. Plotter had me sailing through the end of the cliff and the rocks weren’t that far away.
What an awe inspiring documentary that rocked my world. The narration, video quality and story(s) line were perfect, bar none.
Thanks Dylan, much appreciated
Ps put a little something into paypal, because i can :)
Love this latest film Dylan. Especially the long fade in the northern twilight. The bird calls put me in mind of Finnish composer Rautavaara’s Cantus Arcticus, (Concerto for Birdsong and Orchestra). Well worth a listen if you don’t already know it, one quiet evening when you need some peace.
Doing what I can to help keep your excellent videos coming!
Sorry should have added it:

Dylan,
Another great video, how much footage do you take when you are out sailing and do you have an idea of what you want to film beforehand or just wing it with the experience you have. PBO should get you to be one of their regular features as you are probably closer to the average reader/sailor than a lot of the other contributors. Keep them coming while you can, which incidentally was some advice given to me by my old Dad regarding girlfriends, but the comment fits your videos as well.
Most excellent film! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!
I have a Galion 22. A fairly early one that was sailed over sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Possibly as a participant in an early Transat.
I hope to one day sail the periphery of the Chesapeake Bay with it much the same as you’ve done around the UK.
Our tides here are a bit less robust than yours but the scenery – which can only be seen from the water – is still pretty impressive.
Keep sailing, keep making films and I’ll keep supporting as I can.
Fair winds!
Hello Dylan,
really enjoyed this one. wasn’t long into it before i had to put you on pause and cure the overwhelming urge for a cup of Earl Gray. i liked your history lesson, especially the part about your father and his like of the yanks. i spent a little time near Stonehenge once in one of the little army posts. one of your old WWII blokes was telling me a story about as far as the eye could see the pup tents that housed the yanks. he said the only problem with them was “They were oversexed, overpaid, and over here!”
Cheers mate.
Your daughter is correct. I should be paying for your content! There are other sailing videos which are fun but to put it mildly, they are totally vacuous. At 65 years of age and father of three lovely daughters, the bikini clad girls in those videos don’t hold the same attraction powers they had on me when I was 16. Go figure. My father flew B-17’s in WWII and I know so much about that war from an American’s perspective. When I hear other stories of other people who fought and suffered and hear those stories from another perspective, I feel more complete. Having spent 22 years of my professional career in the fish and seafood distribution business, being the first buyer to introduce Norwegian aquacultured, Atlantic Salmon to the market in Chicago back in 1979 or 80, the story of the challenges of aquaculture bring back memories of years gone by and concerns of times past manifested in the present. No surprises for me just validation of what I knew back when. All that being said I find myself at a loss to contribute as I have attempted to do so and have come to multiple dead ends. M.O.B. Fund, and the PayPal button below your videos lead me to PayPal but PayPal does not lead me back to your sight either the blog site, email, or cell phone reference. I have an account with PayPal. I have used it multiple times in my computer life. I can’t seem to connect with your site. Hummmm. Help me out now and I promise that I’ll pay a goodly amount each time I view one of your journies. They have become dear to me and i look forward to them. I so want a sailboat. Thinking I’ll purchase an Alberg 30, sail the Great Lakes, and maybe down the East Coast to Florida. Challenge is that 45 years ago I didn’t ask my bride to be whether she would like to go sailing with me. Drat! If I only know then what I know now, or, if I only knew the most important questions to ask back then. Double Drat! Anyway, so as to continue to allow myself to vicariously live my sailing life partially through your exploits and amazing narratives, help me pay you now and in the future. ;) “Lilly Livered Liberal…” ha, ha, ha.
Absolutely loved it. It contained everything I love about your documentaries. A bit of sailing to make me feel like I’m actually a sailor, and loads of really interesting and well presented history.
And you were great at MYC last week too!
Another great film Dylan. Saddened that you have to sell the Centaur so will tap again when I finish writing this. Cheers H
Thanks for your efforts. Some of us only dream of where you take us. I love history lessons and contact with local lore.
Who knows, maybe someday I will have the opportunity to shake your hand and share a meal with you.
Dear Eleanor
I agree with you whole heartidly, Get the old boy into marketing more. Make him wear a KTL baseball cap or sweatshirt and lets see how many people comment asking how they can get one – or perhaps a KTL travel mug. Then he can thank you later for being right. Oh and get the bugga on Facebook – the like and share and page boost options are great. Dylan – stop being such a perfectionist and promote yourself as a business just for bloody once – Rant Over , Dylan we all love you but your films are so good , so interesting and factual and tranquil and relaxing etc etc we feel like we are on holiday with you !
I actually looked at a Hurley when I was searching for my ‘perfect’ boat.
I like the Galion better. 3700 lbs displacement, 50% ballast/displacement ratio, standing headroom (for a short person), and a fin keel. She’s a stiff little boat…. And only draws 3 1/2′.
No inboard in mine, which I prefer – leaves plenty of room for battery placement down low in the motor cavity while still leaving lots of room for storage.
I’d love to find out more on the history of this boat. Her number indicates a very early production date. And her first registered name was “Transat 1” I’ve been told. But I have no idea how to research British registration info on something like this.
Not everyone who watches your films is old.
Don’t worry – I saw your films from e.g. the Butley River – not exactly what most people would call comfortable, even tolerable in most cases! No, we enjoy the stuff you produce and it does as you say require a reasonable base from which to shoot video, charge batteries, upload footage and stay sane.
Your constant ability to change tack (pun intended) as circumstances change is inspiring, as is your continuing enthusiasm for the project.
Once again, all the best and I hope to see you on the water again before too long.
Dylan.
So we watched this lovely film on the big Telly , delightful , I had the full advert in the middle as I was watching on the you tube channel that comes with my cable subscription. That’s about $75/ month plus another $60 for the internet, and $40+ for the phone taxes etc by the way!. Kind of puts the $10 tap a month in perspective and I don’t think I tap anywhere as much as that.
So I noticed your ‘you tube’ subscription are about 14000, seem like quite decent amount so I went to look at my other yachting Utube channel follow/subscribe to , most were about the same or less , some way more like white spot pirate 40,000+ it’s she has 30yrs on you and exotic locations. Most of them use Patron to assist with funding .
Before I looked up the stats I checked you channel and clicked the ‘from the beginning’ playlist and have been having a delightful couple of hours,so far, watching your early stuff from Bembridge to the Medway so far. Lots and lots of interesting stuff to talk about and film. I would encourage everyone to spend an enjoyable evening watching. Defiantly worth rerelease I think there must be plenty who have never seen the early stuff.
Cheers warren
Any way of reaching out to the more obscure young people who like documentaries? Personally I like the history information and stories you have about the places you go to.
Can’t agree more about the tea,(sorry gene) we can get Tetley in the states but but the everyday tea of choice is called ‘red Rose’ puke name, but it’s decent black tea and make a good cuppa unless you just come back from Uk and it tastes wimpy for a day or 2. There is nothing like a good hair on the chest cup of tea to get you going first think in the morning though. It seems to clear the morning mist too……
Coffee, never make it , but drink it all day, I buy at my local convince store chain” Wawa” for $1.50/20 oz mug full, can’t beat it. Starbucks ?uck! burns my throat and costs $$$ and you have to stand in line and get some pilliark to pour it for you!
Never buy tea when I’m out……..the concept of water at a “rolling boiling” has not reached the USA yet.
Cheers Warren
I like this idea, and would eagerly buy a couple of shirts emblazoned with “I sailed ’round Britain with Dylan Winter”…”keepturningleft.co.uk”…”I vicariously sailed The Slug” or something witty that guides people to your website. I go through ball caps at a good clip and would relish a couple.
If Eleanor is keen on marketing, why not ask her to run this end of the business? Maybe she’d work cheap.
If 1.5 percent of your 14000 subscribers bought a shirt or cap or two, and you made £10 from each subscriber, you’d be £2700 to the good.
I think Sea Blue would be a good color.
Yes I think about a holiday home too like
http://apolloduck.net/391739
Or this
http://www.apolloduck.com/feature.phtml?id=501474
Now all I need is holidays……
What does it cost to keep a boat these days in UK?
Cheers. Warren
Ah and here i thought i was being all “English”. btw i do have Tetley’s also but according to a 2010 survey a small minority likens Earl Gray with being posh. as i don’t see myself as posh i will exhaust my supply of the gray and stick to the more manly Tetley. thanks for setting me straight.
Great bit of film Dylan, really liked shots of Ronas Voe and the red stone geology. Did you not have the time to look at Unst? Thanks mate well done…And you say Lunna ..Loona (sorry couldn’r resist it).
Hi Dylan, what a wonderful film again!
The tacking-sceens mixed with the story of the shetland bus is really a “finesse”, feels like sailing together and beeing told the story on the way! And the best end of an episode ever!
While watching and having in mind your words about the paypal-taps, that peak shortly after the release and fade away too soon I was about to recommend, that you make your films shorter. That would make the waiting for the next episode easier. (Normally I check your blog at least once a week to see if there`s something new :-) ). That would give the followers more occations to pay!
But at the end of the film I realised that the length of the film and the calmness of the way you tell the story gives the audience the time to calm down themselves. After half an hour of whatching, one had the time to open ones heart and soul and to get an impression of the overwhelming landscape and beauty of an overcast and windy day at sea!
I appreciate your filming very much and i can understand why your artistic approach doesn`t cope with the sketchy and bustling youtube-entertainment.
Maybe there could be a way to have both: More frequently puplished shorter films to get more revenue, popularity and subscriptions on youtube and the epic long-versions once in while on the blog for those who understand and cherish your approach!
Thank you very much for your inspiring and wholehearted stories, your forthrigthness and humor!
Christoph
PS: As a long-term husband myself a can really encourage your plan to get a comfortable boat and recommend a proper double-berth.
Enjoy life, sailing and being together with the one you love as much as possible!
PPS: how can I change the picure beneth my comment? That`s definitly not me….
Folks, I think it’s time we all step up and support Dylan with a donation. Let’s each one of us put our money where our web browser is and send him at least $5 or$ 5 Pounds each which ever you prefer. We all know we enjoy his fantastic commentary and his dry wit. Don’t be a slug…get that wallet out. Cheers!
I’ve gone off Salmon steak now :-(
Dylan, I finally got round to watching this one ‘on the big telly’ (as recommended). Enjoyed every bit…even educational bit about parasites. I clicked on the Paypal button and made a small contribution. When I looked st my Paypal email receipt, I realized it had gone to your old Virgin email account. Does Paypal somehow re-route these payments to you, or have I got to go after a refund and start over?
Will you be dishonoured if I drink single malt? Life is too short for bad wine and cheap scotch (at least, that’s what I tell my kids).
Hello Dylan. I hope you are in the Pink! Just watching again after Recent Wife’s illness and House move upheaval. What are you doing now, July 2019. Any new Sailing adventures? Wanted your advice about buying a Centaur, What to look out for etc. She is an 1979 Model with the B layout, very like the one you sailed, C/W a 20 HP Beta Diesel with Low Hours. The Keels have been refitted and Bolted with Stainless Bolts, Etc and the Hull Epoxied and resprayed 2 Years ago. Kind Regards, George in County Down.
