Occasionally I get an email asking about cameras
the details of the ones I use are here

An interesting thread appeared on YBW the other day
http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?373898-GoPro-What-do-you-think
started by a delivery skipper who makes some lovely films about his work
http://www.youtube.com/user/HalcyonYachtsLtd?feature=watch
The thread went in the usual direction with lots of posts of some great footage
but all with loud music smeared all over it and with the usual fish-eye views.
one contribution really struck home
" most people don't want the sound anyway.
I can only think of one sailing video that I've left the sound in, and it wouldn't really make any difference if it was taken out."
one bloke said go Pro does do sound and posted this great bit if film of a very dramatic gybe inĀ a big boat
this is great stuff but imagine if you could hear what was going on as well
another chap said "most camera sound sucks without a mike"
this is sound on the waterproof xacti
I also made a film abou the Xacti - it was made on the old 720p not the newer one which is now sold as a panasonic
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-WA2-Full-Vertical-Camcorder/dp/B006T9JKDY
all the sound on here is from the Xacti
for me the sounds of sailing are almost as important as the visuals
worth buying a camera that is waterproof, does not have a fish eye lens and also does a decent job of the sound ... and one that is cheaper
The Go cameras are okay but I get tired of the fisheye view. If there’s another boat nearby you can’t really get a good shot. I’ve drooled over the Panasonic but it’s a bit out of my budget and I’m not sure my computer has the power to edit 1080. I have just gone from standard to 720. BTW, I like the sailing sounds as long as the wind doesn’t overwhelm it. See Dylan’s excellent tip on that on his blog post. There’s a lot to learn from watching his videos; watch them twice, once for sailing and once for video technique.
Just out of curiosity, how much of what you shoot isposted and how much winds up “on the cuttung room floor?”
So if you chuck 90% do you delete completely or do you have a giant storage bin/drive just in case.?
