ktl 211 film West Mark Knock

West Mark Knock in the Wash. Down the Nene out for a not so quiet night on the moorings out by RAF No 3. The Wisbech harbour Authority have put down three mooring bouys for the convenience of small boats waiting for the tide. When the tide is out they are well sheltered and only yards from the "shore" and a nearby wreck, but at high tide the shore is at least two miles away so they can get very lumpy when the wind is in the wrong direction. There is a lot of stuff happening out at the Knock

Dylan, Did you find out what the donut is all about?

According to Google, it was built in the 70s as a trial for a hairbrained scheme to build freshwater reservoirs (for use on land) in the sea. They found (surprise surprise) that the water became salty, and that it cost a fortune to build even this small trial version, so gave up.

What is that (looks like stainless steal) hunk of metel around your cutwater. I am guessing that it is some sort of protective device for banging into debris.
Another question on the ‘Kings English’. What is a “Lynn” as in ‘Kings Lynn’?
I see you call the water ripples from wind puffs “zephyrs”. We call them “catspaws”. Go figure.

  4. 12 April, 2011 at 4:14 pmkeepturningleft says:

no idea what a lynn is, as for the chuck of metal – its a battering ram!

although I think its really there because they were going to suggest that a slug was a trailer sailer to it was for pulling the boat onto the trailer.

Always called em zephyrs…any other brits use the term

Zephyr of course comes from Zephyrus.

I’d call the puff (or any light breeze) a “zephyr”, but the ripples “catspaws”, personally.

Zephyr is the air movement, catspaw is the effect of the zephyr on the surface

    Dylan, what have you done?

Suddenly everything works perfectly! No need to download for 20 minutes before viewing – no stopping mid sentance and full screen is in much better focus – just like the telly!

Whatever it is, don’t change anything.

Oh and I still like watching the sailing and particularly the seals – The only thing that betters it is on my own boat.

    Hi Dylan,
Don’t know what you did but, you did it right!

Best Video ever, not too keen on Helicopters playing at night though :-)

Browser is Firefox on Win 7.

Lynn means ‘pool’ as in useful bit of water for loading, unloading or berthing boats (e.g. Liverpool, ‘Pool of London’ etc.). King’s Lynn was originally Bishop’s Lynn as the town was founded and largely owned by a bishop. The change to King’s Lynn was Henry VIII making a point following the dissolution of the monasteries… not a popular move and the town remains “Lynn” to the locals as a small on-going act of defiance.

    Hi Dylan
We used to anchor ‘tween tabs head and wainfleet and watch the jets dropping bombs on the old dredger from Wells kids used to love it when they came past low with afters on.Havent seen copters before, though had a 2 engined byplane fly past us skimming the water no more than 50 yards, a few years ago(not that long! Im not that old!)Really must get back up there for a trip.

Free mooring with a fireworks display.
    Kewl !!!
    Daft question maybe…
I don’t see a functioning turning basin near Sutton Bridge for those ships. The ship in the Google images at the wharf downstream of Sutton bridge is clearly longer than the Nene is wide. What looks like it should be a basin just upstream of the wharf is a mud flat. The nearest point that the Nene itself is wide enough to turn the ship at the wharf is almost 3 miles downstream. Which seems a long way to reverse a ship…
    What am I missing here?

there is a winding hole just up from the dock – it is full of mud at low tide – but at high tide there is enough space for the coasters to put their bows in there

as for the fireworks – it must be bloody frighteneing to have one of those things coming at you out of the dark. I assume that they have night goggles on – you would not have a clue where the next shots were coming from

    Milk

I use a product called Just Milk.
You can get it from JS Sainsbury in 500ml bottles.
It is a UHT milk but it tastes fine in coffee and tea.
    It keeps very well.
We have left a part used bottle on board from 1 weekend to the next and it was usable when we checked it.

    Dylan,

Enjoyed “Vlog 103 West Mark Knock” very much. Nice pace to it.

Thanks for showing the LED 12 volt portable anchor light, from Salty John’s, in action. I was thinking about ordering one and have decided, after seeing yours, will. Please keep showing other things, as you do from time to time, that work well, or don’t.

I also liked your bus trip, too, and hope you post more land travel videos, too.

    Thanks and pleasant voyaging,

    Ed

I love that you are concerned with dirtying a teaspoon when everything else on the slug appears to be filthy. Even the charts are covered in mold! You are definitely my kind of sailor. I’ve just renewed. Keep up the good work.

The new server makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. Please pass on my compliments to your technical guy.

What happened at minute 9:30? Did you get shot? No more video until minute 19: or so. Then a short piece of a container ship.
    Love the LED!
