Please feel free to pay something for the entertainment value of these thoughtful and occasionally beautiful films

thanks for arriving here and considering chipping in for the entertainment value of these films. Pay whatever you like.

My thoughts on how much you might like to pay are at the bottom of the page  after the winter images from Scotland

chip in if you wish
I just want to say that….

Pay what you like –  you can send money to my email

[email protected]

or you can send a cheque or cash to

My address is Genoa Lodge, Deben Lane, Waldringfield, Suffolk IP12 4QN

Each of these films takes about three weeks to edit. I have 9 more films in the can before I run out of material. These films will cover the West Coast down the North Minch to the Summer Isles, to the amazing Handa,Loch Drambuie, Salen, Tobermory, the sound of Mull, CorryVrekan, Craobh, through the Crinan canal and the Clyde to Glasgow – and a few more places along the way.

One theme of my lovely emails, apart from an astonishing array of boats, is people seem not to know how much to tap.

I am not sure how to answer that . Anything is great.  Even a dollar.

Some people tap more. One bloke from the States sent me $200. I sent an email back asking why.

This is what he said.

“I dowloaded all your films and watch them in the morning with my coffee because the news is so horrible. I was mortified when I discovered that you had sold your boat. I thought you would be there forever. I assumed that you did not need any money.

I think that I had rationalised not tapping you anything because, in my head, you were some sort of eccentric English millionaire philanthropist genius amateur film maker who thought that sailing a crap boat to interesting places was cooler than sailing a good one. I realise this was a way of me justifying not giving any money to a friend I had been sailing with for many miles  and over  several years.  When  I heard you had sold the boat I realised that it was partly my fault so I sent the money for the eight DVD sets sitting on my hard drive.”

Now not everyone does the same obvioulsy – and I am not sure I would do it myself, but us Brits are always uncomfortable with tipping anyway.

Another bloke taps per film – never on the day he watches it. His measuring stick is if he starts thinking about the film the day after then he taps me while he is thinking about the film.

Another measures his tap according to the Netflix standard

“The way I look at it is that if I hire a film from Amazon, or back in the good old Blockbuster days, I would pay a fiver for a film.  This is what you want people’s mind set to be.  It looks like you’ve have a few very generous philanthropists who are happy to bung you the big amounts but I wonder if some of the other larger payments will be more like a subscription that people don’t then repeat and end up thinking they have paid for all future films and you see income dropping from its current spike.  The sustainable model is  that x number of people pay x pounds each time a film goes up giving you an idea of what your cash flow will be and then you can focus on trying to increase that number of people.

For me I shall continue with “pay as you go” and hope that more people out there do to.”

The financial model for KTL is now the buskers cap.

Will I earn enough this year to put me square again and let me re-boot the series in a boat with a heater?

Selling the centaur and stopping the bills for 2017 was a great help.

But then, a few people ask a perfectly sensible question. “What am I paying for if you have no boat and are not doing any filming?”

The answer is for the  entertainment value they offer.

It is all you ever pay for when you buy music, or a box set, or pay to watch game of thrones on netflix, football on skye or the local free fireworks display when they don’t charge you to get in but rattle a bucket at you as you leave.  You are not paying for the actors wages or the horses they have killed in the battle scenes, or the footballers cars  but for the enjoyment.

pay what it is worth to you. If it worth nothing and you have watched all those hours of KTL in the hope that it will eventually entertain you then chip in nowt. I am sorry for having wasted all those hours of your time.

On the other hand if it is, in your mind, better than a box set of Game of thrones or Busty bints on the Binge then maybe as much as you pay for that.

It is an act of uber altruism to send money to a bloke you have never met for no tangible reward

Amazing men.
