    Wonderful Dylan
    No Irish sea video?
You could probably re release these weekly as a new channel ‘sailing turns left’. So many people weren watching 10 years ago!
    Cheers Warren

the story of the short lived second Centaur is due to start in January

we only stopped two nights in the Irish sea so barely kissed the side – unfinished business

    Man that’s a Map !

    Respect Sir..

Watching your first films is like watching old re-runs of Doc Martin; it certainly reinforces the maxim ‘tempus fugit’. I am the same age as you Dylan and I am glad that you are still planning to close the circle (even if by ferry and ebike).

  5. 1 December, 2018 at 12:50 pmdylan winter says:

There is still the story of the short lived Centaur 2 to come – due to appear here in January. I spent half a summer and half a winter on the west coast before selling her –

Managed to find TAP button tonite. Thanks for all your wonderful poetic videos. I hope to be back sailing in Wells in spring, after 26′ boat has her winter in compound. Wish you get travelling again soon, to complete your circle. Keep in touch. Best Wishes.

  7. 7 December, 2018 at 11:11 pmdylan winter says:

    thanks M

I spent one winter and two half summers in wells – and jolly nice it was too

I loved the wash, wainfleet, the nene, boston, so many great places to sail

I think you were there about that time , KTL Season 4 e12.
You might have been their during filming
Having trouble figuring out the date of each ktl season
The TV show is apparently helping toursium in the area.
    Cheers Warren

  9. 9 December, 2018 at 11:43 pmWarren says:

Well I guess there was no film of Blythe to Anlmouth and the river , it would be episode 10 1/2 I guess.

I seem to remember making one… I will have a poke around to see if I can find it.

Not quite related, but we have had no reporting of late on the electric bike and outboard, and how they have performed. Would be interesting to know.

  12. 20 December, 2018 at 7:20 amCharles says:

Hi Dylan, it seems that Ron from Ronaldsay has had his way and you’ve closed off the whole lot from YouTube. Is this right? Very sad, I’m having to watch assorted Scandiwegians fettle boats instead of you pottering around rivers.

  13. 20 December, 2018 at 8:43 amdylan winter says:

    charles,

thanks for asking. Youtube has not been working for KTL at all – more and more hits each day with the growth mostly on smart Tvs – which is good because the films look great on a big telly – but bad because no visits to the website and the paypal button.

When they were all on youtube they were getting around 3,000 a day. The films now nearly all via this webste are around 500 a day.

But most of them have come via this website – taps have held pretty steady. The films are all on youtube still but only linked via this website. Sorry for the inconvenience but if I had kept just posting them willy nilly on youtube the future for the project was inevitable.

So my plan is to put the voice overless version of each film on youtube as a public film – but for a limited time in the hope that people will come here to see what I have to say about the images on the screen.

I am some-what doubtful that this will work but it is worth a try. Youtube has started sending me ever more frantic computer generated missives telling me that I should really make my films all public again – so clearly I am not the only serious film maker who is just using youtube as a hosting service.

I agree about the recent Ran films – rather good I think.

No worries Dylan , if you could get a few bikinis in the next series ? ——- only joking , safe travels, I look forward to seeing them soon

Any progress on getting a boat Dylan?

  18. 10 January, 2019 at 1:17 pmdylan winter says:

Slow progress N – I am still about £10K short….I have enough for a really bad one with a liability engine ….. chances are I might end up spending most of this coming summer fettling a fixer upper.

  19. 10 January, 2019 at 7:21 pmNiall says:

Fettling not good when you could be sailing😩. You’re welcome to come to Scotland with me, Mylor to Western Isles via Wales, Ireland and IOM.

  20. 10 January, 2019 at 10:53 pmdylan winter says:

    very nice offer N

I love sailing solo – I can beeble off course whenever I like… it is the freedom that does it for me

  21. 18 January, 2019 at 9:27 amDavid Claassen says:

I have discovered that the kind of shallow-water creek and river sailing that you do so effortlessly can be quite difficult to master…still working on it and will continue doing so, but I rely way too much on the outboard instead of my boat handling skills.

I think my love of the east coast comes from your videos. It is impossible for me to be on the Orwell, or in the Backwaters, or anywhere in those parts without your voice in my head….in a good way, of course.

  22. 18 January, 2019 at 5:48 pmdylan winter says:

Thanks David….very nice thing to say. In my head I mostly have Maurice Griffiths…. although I have never heard him speak. Sailing is easy, sailing is simple – sailing is safe. It is really very hard to do much damage to life or limb in a boat. Small ones bounce off most things.

You had 15 thousand subscribers on Youtube but removed all your videos from there?

  26. 18 February, 2019 at 8:46 amwilful sprite says:

Ok I just read your reply to someone else above. The thing is that Youtube drives traffic to your Paypal. It’s publicity. It’s advertising. If I can come here and watch it for free, then it doesn’t mean I have to pay. It also means less exposure because you are no longer on Youtube!
Other sailing channels have links to patreon. Go on patreon. Or have a link to your website on the films. Even if people can’t click the links they can see where to go.
    No Youtube, fewer punters. :(

  27. 18 February, 2019 at 10:18 amdylan winter says:

the hits on youtube films are worthless to me – although they make money for youtube.

    – a bit like empty calories.

Removing them brought you here Will….

and made you think about chipping in for the busker

  28. 18 February, 2019 at 10:25 amdylan winter says:

You tube is designed to drive people to more youtube and away from anything close to a paypal button

while we watch stuff on youtube…. on the right hand side are girlies or shootings or Trump or football

at the end of watching one of my films you tube fills the screen with the same but slightly different list according to how long you watched my films.

For all of us, me included, the Youtube app is a safe place where everything is free and without consequences. We also know that if one of the people we digitally sail with puts up another film then the youtube app will diligently tell us about it straight away and offer it to our screens for freemans.

so why bother ever leaving the app – especially to go somewhere with the merest hint of a buskers cup.

You might spend 50 hours a week on youtube and never ever consider paying for anything ever again. On the other hand if you watch a film here or watch ten films over a week perhaps, post a comment, post three and with any luck you might begin to appreciate the value of these films and the work involved in getting them to your desktop ….. or not.

so far, for 97 per cent of KTL sailing viewers, the answer is that it is not worth anything other than their time.
I cannot really carry on making films unless a few more of the regular 8,000 who watch every film can be persuaded to chip in.

Hi Dylan, now that you’ve got us all hooked, and for you to get a just return is there no way that if you were to make a new series it could only be accessed once you’ve hit the pay pal button. You could publish adverts and “tasters” on you tube that would drive punters to the area of this site where you’d have to “buy” the new series.
Or maybe the videos could act like the “milk and bread” of the supermarket, an item that you don’t earn much money on but drives us to a site full of merchandise that you do make money on. Anyone for a MOB t shirt, a KTL mug or even a KTL sailing book “The journey so far”?

  30. 24 February, 2019 at 8:26 amdylan winter says:

    S,

I have thought of every way of getting traction – qnd it comes down to the fact that old blokes sailing shit boats up muddy river is a minority interest.

Youtube knows that and its algorithmns – for all their supposed sophistication – are pretty crude things. You can only guess how they work but the thumbnails are crucial. A glimpse of the youtube algogrithmns can be seen by the way that it chooses the images to go with each film. It used to offer a choice of three thumbnails – one from exactly half way through and two more – one at 25 per cent through and another at 75 per cent through. Unless you now upload your own image to insert it will now choosse images for you. It chooses smiling faces…. it chooses women over men… it chooses dolphins…. it never chooses sunsets or boats. The only time there has been a bikini in my films it went straight for it so I assume that it offer us as youtube browsers – smiles, bikinis, women and animals.

I have tosome-how get people to seek me out – removing the films from youtube has tripled the visits to the website – altouigh hits per film is right down, revenue has held steady – at around £250 per film.

At say 20 films per winter that £250 revenue per film is not going to get me a warm boat for scotland –

I like the idea that the films are free and that people chip in something comensurate with the enjoyment they give.

I am currently uploading the last but one Moray film – I will put that on vimeo at 4K and see if that changes the dynamic at all.

I will also post it on youtube as a link for those who dislike vimeo because getting it onto the 4k smart TV is a bit of a challenge.

One of the advantages of all but killing the youtube space is that the hits per day – now all through the website – are much stedier. with oytube, if I put a film up I get 3,000 hits in the first day, then around 5,000 more over the following week. So I get thee massive(to me) spikes. With the films just linked through here the website ticks along at a steady 500 visits and views per day. So that gives me something to work on as opposed to endlessy trying to guess whatbthe youtube alogorithmn wants this week.

The oproblem for me is that to succeed in making travelling saiiling films for youtube you need

1/a girl who looks good in a thumbnail

    2/a film every week

So that puts me behind the loop straight away. I could make a film each week – but it would be a terrible film.

After I finish with Moray i have a few films to post next winter from the final centaur and see what happens to those.

The good thing is that this market is changing all the time – who knows how it will be behaving next winter.

So – just twomore films this winter from me – this summer I will be sailing Katie around the east coast and keeping my eyes open for a terrible fisher to fettle.

    D

There are around 8,000 people who will watch evry film I put on you tube – and around 500 who will come here to watch films. Of those around 100 have every chipped in – nothing wrong with that of course – I am offering them for free.

Dear Dylan, your videos are my bedtime blessings, beautiful to watch and engrossing to view a cruise through your lense. It would be really super to get a special with your lovely wife and the practicalities of victualling a small boat. Kind regards, Bec. PS you have an audience well under 40 years old and not just grumpy old men. Fair winds!

  32. 26 February, 2019 at 4:00 pmdylan winter says:

    very good indeed Reb

first of all – quick, quick – buy a boat or spend more time with your boat if you already have one

second – thanks for the tap

    third…

I think you are highly unlikely to ever see such a video – I think have to guess what sort of person she is from the videos – for me she is an angel who walks upon the earth

however, as for victualling when she is aboard – we are seldom more than three stops from a shop – even if it is on an island. So it is little different from being at home. There is no fridge but we are cold water sailors and the under-seat lockers are cool – so meat and dairy keep well. We always have UHT milk on board – but prefer ordinary. We seldom eat out at pubs or cafes – but you can buy lovely pies of all sorts, fresh veg, spuds, bread.

When it is just me alone it is bread, black coffee, eggs, cheese, baked beans. Now you see why it is better that I keep the camera on the scenery.

    Dylan
