This evening I went for a sail on my local river
just passing scenery, a few nice looking boats and the sound of sailing
Is the no sound deliberate? Heard some voice over2/3rd thru.
That black yawl is perfect for river sailing. Is that a high peak lug sail? A lot of sail high up over the trees
Cheers Warren
I cranked up the sound an finally got it.no worries , just missed the intro music with google earth view. also air con on its 92 F!
Boat spotting….
Hoodwink, that’s a North Sea 24 I think , same as I sailed and raced on it 60’s&70’s, looks like my dads, one of a batch made in Spain , strip planked in iroko and epoxy coated , rock solid. ( I don’t recognize the name though), ours was Albuera, Mar Del Norte,, another . A 3rd was EORA champion in 66-67?. One of Kim Holmans last racing designs. ( or it’s a tucker brown boat but I don’t think so) there was one called Whiplash in the late 70’s that was one rediculiously faster than all the others. I think it was white elm over oak frames. But the owner was very secretive. East coast sailing memories. ( big brother of twister and rustler 31 in frp)
Looking forward to seeing Riis 11. , lovely 20’s motor yacht , was know as the (west) Mersea Destroyer , was owner by Dr Fellow for 50? Years. Boat was built as 21st birthday gift as one of a pair for the daughters of some long forgotten Arab shah……
( I saw it in you previous Deben film years hrs ago)
Cheers Warren .
https://vimeo.com/114898477 At about 3.50
You have to be into this sort of thing but Dr Fellows spend an awfully lot of time and money mataining this beautiful classic.
It was hauled out every year on the Clark and carter marine railway in west Mersea.
How could you not be impressed , and not slab of fiberglass anywhere.
Cheers Warren
Ps I do hope it’s still alive on the Deben.
I remember her when I was sailing out of West Mersea 30 years ago. She is not on the lower Deben at the moment – she light be up at Woodbridge. I will look out for her
I’m sure you do, everybody passed her on her mooring in the Mersey quarters.
Did I see an orange version of Katie L at about 3.00 on the same earlier video? A cat ketch version with a mizzenmast staysal up? They do have a warm look about them
Cheers Warren
It is the same hull W – but with the cat rig. Strangely enough mine is easier to drop for the bridges…. and… I think it looks better.
Opening scenes, I believe, are of a Nigel Irens design called Roxane. Simple elegance. Might also have seen Roxane’s little sister, Romilly, a few frames on. Irens has also designed some outrageous multi-hulls. Do enjoy getting back on a river. The last couple of videos remind me of early days with old Slug. Good stuff.
My best friend’s father built a 73-ft racing cutter with a 3-ft draft (…and a YUUGE daggerboard). They used to drift it over the sand-bars in the New Jersey and Maryland coastal inlets; and through the shallow back-bay waters under-sail in light-air with the board all-the-way up and frighten the locals. The problem getting up-river was the 108-ft air-draft to the masthead.
It was designed for offshore racing and had a huge amount of room below-decks, like a scaled-down J-boat.
Just wondering how the “new” engine is going? Cheers Steve
Lovely vid. I have fond memories of the Deben from my youth. Even scraping the bar in poor weather seemed like an adventure!
