Elderly hypocrit fires up old Evinrude

I inherited an almost unused two cylinder, long shaft six hp, two stroke evinrude from Jills uncle Peter who sailed the Walton Backwaters. It is at least 35 years old and has hardly been used.

I dug it out and fired it up because I am an engine down at the moment. I have a replacement second hand tohatsu coming at the end of this month - £500

so I will be selling this Evinrude outboard once I have used it for a few days to make sure that it has no inherent problems

this is what I said earlier about running two strokes

This is about Dylan Winter's Blog, Sailing around Britain.

The good points with a old Seagull is they are not heavy to hump around, I have a 5hp Seagull Silver Century for my 18ft Launch as back up and works well and not a back braking job lifting on and off the outboard bracket.

Although, one time last year I almost felt throwing it overboard as both the main Engine and then the Seagull did not work and had the last option the pair of Oars to get back home!.

I have the exact same outboard ,it’s my second one, although it might be older mine is a 1968
That twin eveinrude was a great engine it came in everything from a 4hp to a 15 hp. Simple reliable , Resonable light ( espically compared to new a 4 banger).
A real shame they outlawed the small 2-strokes. If I used a gallon of fuel all season it was a lot …..yeh yeh oil in water etc but for crying out loud at 50 :1 it’s only a sniff and the sun degrades it fast.
England still pumps its Sh*t into the water and that much worse for the fishes and moluscses .

It does a great job of running at trawling speed – but there are a lot of old plastic components and electrics under there so I am unbsure about its relaiblity long term. I do know that it is a really thirsty thing compared to the tohatsu
