I’d ask around, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was you wanted……..
No…damn, It’ll come back to me.

At l the risk of appearing ignorant, why a. Centaur exactly? What attributes does it have that others don’t?

  3. 26 December, 2013 at 8:21 pmJulian fisk says:

I get the size issues, but are there no other similar vessels that fit the bill?

3,000 of them… and if the well works in one it will work in 2,999 others

and PBO are keen on the Centaur connection – plus it is an English classic

When you get 1 you wont want to part with it, and so the fleet increases and the effects of that sailors afliction grow.
Or as a mate said in the club bar “Dylan Winter doing the daft things so the rest dont have to”
    Keep up the good work

And when you get one Dylan, make sure it’s got a lovely little Yanmar in it – and forget the outboard rubbish!

Can understand the need for a bit more room for you and ‘er indoors, but rest of the family and a dog??

Think of the smell when they get wet!!

okay – you convinced me – point me to the one with the lovely lobster pot proof Yanmar for £1500

believe me I have reservations about the dog – I am looking for a three month dog sitter. It is trying to dry four wet suits on a 26 footer that will be a challenge

Remembered looking at this some time ago, seems the guy makes a habit of fitting outboards to yatchs.

perhaps once I have done this boat I could set up a business

    naaaa – rather sail

    Dylan,

I have searched through your posts on the subject but cannot find any indication of your budget. For instance at http://www.westerly-owners.co.uk/craftforsale.php there is a Centuar at Sunderland YC for £7500. Not only the lowest price I have found but not too far from Edinburgh.

Given your normal budgetary constraints, I suspect that you are after something much cheaper but cannot help find without an indication. I may have missed it but what are you think of spending on the purchase and what are you after in terms of sails, rigging etc for your money?

  14. 30 December, 2013 at 3:26 pmDavid J says:

Outboards aren’t lobster-pot-proof either, unless the shaft swings up through an open transom or up on a transom-mounted bracket. Even then, not so good. Once I was trying to sell a boat and on the demo the outboard prop on my transom-mounted outboard snagged the warp of a crab pot and the mess held the ob shaft underwater. I had to strip to my skivvies, go overboard, and cut the warp away with a knife. No sale was made that day. Now, have you considered a jet drive salvaged from a wrecked jet ski…..?

Sorry old man, if one comes up it will be a part finished project boat with very little on board and a lot of work to do and money to spend. My view is that the only way you will be able to get to sail with family for that kind of price for the period concerned will be to buy a good example for a lot more and sell it for not much less a few months later. Notwithstanding your views regarding inboard engines etc, you will loose too much value if you follow your understandable plan of installing an outboard well.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think your budget will not allow you to achieve your plan. I’ll keep looking though, will pop into some yards on my way to visit my boat after the next depression has passed through. Loads of Centaurs around Gosport and Portsmouth.

Right Dylan, this is the best I can find http://www.boatshop24.co.uk/advert/westerly-centaur-pembrokeshire/39772072. You will have to talk them down a bit and borrow a trailer to move it home for work and then up to Scotland. Will keep on looking but doubt that anything more suitable will be forthcoming.

  24. 16 January, 2014 at 10:49 pmPeter Truelove says:

If you find the right Centaur and buy it. If you then complete the o/b well scheme and get the boat seaworthy.
If you manage to get her to Scotland and successfully complete you summer cruise with the family (and the dog) and then finish up on the west coast………… and believe me I really hope that you do, so that we can all follow it on the blog……….THEN you have to find a buyer for the Centaur (which could take quite some time) and presumably pay to lay her up ashore until you do. More expense or do you have a cunning plan?

  25. 16 January, 2014 at 10:53 pmdylan winter says:

two people have offered to buy her on the basis that if it works well enough to get me safely over the top and around to the west coast they would have a viable and safe boat

One bloke is in Ireland and the other in Wales – if I can deliver it they will buy it

of course we have not spoken about money

I am confident that at the end of the summer the boat will be an assett and not a liability

heck I might even make a profit on her

    next problem….find the boat

    Westerly Tiger – £1500!

    http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/yachts/westerly-tiger-PAA86698

“Although a few inches shorter than the Centaur, they are slightly beamier, and as a result offer very similar interior space. With their well ballasted fin keel and 4′ 3″ draught, the performance is significantly better than the Centaur ( although Centaurs also sail very well ).” – http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/archives/westerly-tiger/westerly-tiger.htm

    well spotted

    not seen that

got to be a bilge keel Centaur though

thank you for pointing her out to me

great leverage when I find the right centaur when it comes to fixing a price
