Thanks Dylan, really enjoyed that. And I’m sure the dolphin-watchers enjoyed your red sail adding to the ambiance as you drifted by.

another good one Dylan. Liked seeing all the Mackays in the highland games bit (I’m a kilt wearing member). those tidal currents are impressive – like what I experience on portions of the Salish Sea.

First you have a go at mobo users, now it’s old men in campervans,

You can go off people you know !

Agree with Dave above I’ve never seen a tide like that one…not even on the Thames, scary,

the Highland games were a nice diversion though and I can well believe you ‘had a moment’ when all of those pipes went past, it must have been quite something!

I found the order of the band quite bizarre, it sort of petered out as it went past and as the drums got smaller and smaller , I guess the bass drums are in the middle so that both the pipes in front and the snares behind can keep the beat…. it still made me smile though as the procession got quieter , and audibly smaller as they went past.

    Cheers,

    Richard

Ps: there’s a Postal Order in the post…… despite the pop at old men in campers !

    Tapped….
Thanks for this, it was a wonderful diversion on a very cold (-40) night in the Great White North….
The countdown timer tells me only 100 more days to go until I am floating on the great freshwater sea.
Kepp up the good work, mate. It’s appreciated!

Wow a brilliant film on the games wihout the narrator walking towards the camera talking, ‘meeting’ someone, ‘having a go’ at something, no range rover either

Your YouTube experience seems to fly in the face of received wisdom: aren’t you supposed to be making money from advertising revenue and smoozing your viewers until they become elite level patreon subscribers? Yet you say it works better with vimeo and PayPal! You subversive mould breaker!

  9. 26 February, 2019 at 3:52 pmdylan winter says:

My films will always be of minority interest – across the first two years maybe an averge of 8,000 youtube views – worth in youtube adsense revenue $16.

So that leaves patreon or the ad-hoc buskers cup of the paypal button.

I like the fact that people like a film enough to chip in the amount it is worth to them… it is more like applause then.

people are more likely to chip in to the buskers cup if they watch a film on my website than if they are offered it by the youtube browser – as I said in the voice over – youtube hits are like empty calories. I will see if this works – if not….I will try something else to get people to watch my film via my webpages. It is about curating my own material rather than leaving it to a google computer to decide what to watch next.

    All good fun I think.

I think it is more like radio with pictures – probably a bad thing. Please feel free to pass it around friends and any scottish people you know.

A joy as always Dylan, looking forward to No8. I didn’t realise that you could get into Ardesier, definitely on my summer list.

Hi Dylan, not sure what to say, I’ve been reading a lot of your comments this morning about the Google/YT beast. I got back into it after not being able to comment on a sailing but family friendly channel. This one is a bit of a how to so comments are always interesting , but they also cut off/ hid his comments on all his videos of the past couple of years…….
A channel I don’t follow Chadtronic has had all his comments removed from all videos , he’s a 1/2m+ views a week channel , mainly stuff for kids about video games etc I think. He is actually scared to do anything , even ‘moderate’ his comments for fear of loosing his Adsense money or pissing off YT , his employer , his words , sound familiar.? You got fired by YT/Google!
So what got me commenting long windedly was the way I support my favorite sailing channels is with Patreon, you are familiar with it. Me and a few other folks support these video makers independent of YT by saying ‘I’ll support you and you can count on me every month’. That’s huge for these folks , it’s really what pays for their film making. Do I wonder if some videos are not worth the couple of dollars per , not really , there are some I forget to watch for a while but they still get my money. I’ll watch later but please just don’t stop.
I know you don’t like the Patreon format you think of it as crowd sourcing but your wrong , it’s simply a subscription service to a video channel, I only pay when they post a video , if they take a break I get a break. It’s simple and it works.
You have tried everything else , what not try this? ( I don’t know if Patreon works only with YT, does it work with an independent website like yours , maybe?)
Sorry nobody reads long comments , have a good day
    Cheers Warren

By the way , no problem watching this in Vimeo, just hit the ‘apple air play ‘ button on the iPad/phone and it miraculous appears full screen on the TV. I think the Apple TV device has something to do with it but that only cost $29,99 6 years ago.
FYI, I think I prefer the boring old videos floating up east coast creeks looking at all the interesting boats and decaying wooden wharfs of a bygon era wondering about the poor folks that built and worked on them. I just don’t get the warm and fuzzy feeling from Scotland, marvelous as some of it is.

    W,

Youtube has never really worked for me – when the DVDs stopped then the income fell dramatically. I think that you are exceptional in the way you chip in – 97 per cent of people never contribute – and with around 8,000 views per film the maths is never going to add up better than relying on the buskers cup. You say Patreon is working for some people – that is true – for some – the high hitters such as sampson, delos and La vag. However, most are not even coming close to covering expenses. Their sailing is almost certainly costing them more than mine is – which in scotland was aroud £6K – down here it is closer to £500 a year.

I have been dancing to the youtube tune for five years now – changing thumbnails, re-uploading, catalogueing and then youtube changes an alogrithmn and it all needs doing again.

So I will try this for a bit – I have nothing to lose – the old wy of doing it was not working… this might work…

that is very good to know

for me here Vimeo does not load as fast or as well as youtube
but then youtube is hard to beat.

I think that the nature of the vids change with where I am, my age, the nature of the competition. I have had to change things – I know my scripts are good and I am too ugly to appear on screen – and it makes my films different from the rest

we shall see how this pans out

Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of England, Wales and the Highlands, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonald’s? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble haggis mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head? I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once, so I follow and keep turning left.

By the way as far as I can tell the Patreon is not restricted to YT so it could be a subscription type service on your own website
    Just a thought
