Well done Dylan………..even spelt your name right!

Very good. Should bring in some new viewers. The writer seems to think your traveling in a Centaur, so guess he hasn’t watched all the videos before publishing.

    Congrats, YAY!!

Youtube is a curious place. I recently have become addicted to Alec Steele, who makes nearly-daily infectious vids and vblogs about blacksmithing and working metal. He’s a 19-yo Norfolk lad who started making Youtube blacksmithing vids in his father’s garage when he was 13, and left-school and started his own commercial forge at 16 teaching serious blacksmithing and tool-making.

He gets 150k – 180k views every day(!) as he makes knives, axes, cabinet hinges and hammers. …But he’s so damned upbeat and positive. A year ago he had just a 15-20 thousand subscribers. Once he got some National and Internet exposure he now has 360,000 subscribers. Last month he got over 2-million views while making a Damascus-steel Viking style sword over the course of a few weeks. Gives me hope that not all of England’s youth are a total write-off.

It’s amazing what a little well-written publicity will do in the right place and time.

Well done Dylan, hope more people Tap some Funds your way……

Look forward to read about your future plans for KTL and a Motor Sailor Boat for 2018.

I doubt that it will make any perceivable difference

Well a statement like “and makes a significant amount of money doing so” isn’t going to help your (valid) claims of penury…. :D

  8. 22 August, 2017 at 5:58 pmdylan winter says:

I am not bust nor in penury…I live in a nice house in a lovely place…

I have a 23 foot yacht 200 yards from the door on a cheap council mooring.

The snag is that KTL as a filming project in scotland hit the rocks.

So, doug is right, the films do/did make a significant amount of money…. but they also cost a slightly more significant amount of money to make than they earned

A great article, Dylan. Had me laughing out loud on several occasions. Newsweek is not small potatoes here in the States, and your vid of the starlings is both brilliant and moving. A near-perfect synchronization of Nature’s aerobatics with classical music. Stunning stuff. A clarion reminder, if any was needed, of how good you are at this.

    It is rather nice….

kicked off a bit of a spat here though

it ranged from the price of my house to Scottish history.

I have ruffled a few feather north of the border.

I rarely go to Sailing forums at all anymore but I just had a quick flick through some of that and now I remember why I dont bother wasting my time.. Don’t listen to any of that nonsense D. I’v been following along since 2009, Your films have always been entertaining and interesting and i have watched many multiple times. I cant say that about any other sailing videos on the internet. I have tried a few of the tit and bum channels but have never made it through a video… The amount of work you put into filming, researching, producing etc and people have a go at you for hoping to make a few quid to keep the show rolling – sad bastards they must be… You have done a great thing making these films of your journey D. I am certain that many people will be enjoying your films long after we are gone… I really do hope you get to finish the journey…

I drilled down into that link as deeply as I could go before the inevitable stomach revolt. Two thoughts popped into my head a few seconds before I bailed:
    1. You can’t have a rational argument with irrational people.
    2. “[I] welcome their hatred.” (quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt, circa 1944, as he campaigned for re-election. [He used the word “we”, not “I”.])

If the “spat” was over that gibberish spouted by the obvious moron (“Jumbled-dick”?, or whatever he called himself), then it was a tiny pile of nothingness. His argument–and that word gives codswallop far more credence than it deserves–was just the pathetic bleating of a nobody who’s done nothing in life, and blames everyone else for his many failures. One 4-minute video from KTL has more intelligence, wit, dignity, and beauty than all of those pointless, jealous ramblings from the insipid souls who waste their lives whining to whomever else is wasting their own lives reading drivel. And if the “spat” wasn’t about Mr. Jumbled-dick’s nocturnal emissions, then I couldn’t be bothered to find it. (Another quote, this one from Joseph Campbell: “As you travel your path in life, birds will shit on you. Don’t bother to brush it off.”)

You are way, way above them, D. Don’t let ’em bring you down.

A lotta nice stills from the Deben in your later post. What type of camera did you use?

I think that there is more than a smattering of politics in many of the negative comments. Most of the anger is coming from scottish nationalists who do not like me saying anything at all that runs contrary to the SNP take on British history which has more than a smattering of the anti-English to it.

One of them started posting some pretty crude and rude stuff on this website using a special unidentifiable email address. But the words used came straight from postings on YBW.

There is also a reticence about tipping people among us Brits. We tip less than Americans and Aussies – we are less likely to support the arts other than through tickets. It is a cultural thing. People also do not recognise that some money and work has gone into making the films.

    We shall see what transpires.

We all out here on the other-side of the screen hope that this interlude is merely a respite of the spirit (and the purse) before the Call of the Seas returns KatieL and her future big sister to the shallow browns and the deeper blue-green waters. To quote the old recruiting poster, “…It’s not a Job, it’s an Adventure!”. If it’s 2018 — or 2019 — does it really matter? With good health there’s still decades of exploring and voyaging left. It’s far too-good of a wanderlust to just fade-away…

And I still hoping to the final footage from the 2016 KatieL and 2017 LilyM Scotland sailing seasons that are still in the can. ….Has it really been 9-years since Bemberg in the Slug?

You really should update the sidebar so new visitors can visit some of the already posted blogs of KatieL in the Scotland Firths, LilyM in Cornwall (which were fascinating), and LilyM in Scotland. Not re-edited, maybe just YouTube playlists that newbies can explore.

I;m not sure it’s healthy that now when I watch other peoples vids I can recognize towns, landmarks and harbors from the Solent to the Humber, and up the Eastern Coast. “Gee, that’s…”

  17. 28 August, 2017 at 4:37 pmA Friend says:

It all depends on whether your ignorant take on Scottish history is intended to be provocative (like your drearily repetitive grumbles about Arthur Ransome) or whether you actually believe it. Either way, attempts to make films about the place are unlikely to carry much weight with people who actually know something about it.

If you don’t want to be criticised for making crappy films about Scotland, make better films about Scotland!

welcome to the website JD. I look forwrd to enjoying your films on Scottish history…. you could start with that important biopic Braveheart and work from there on outwards.

you are a most treasured exception…. youtube tells me that 97 per cent of people who watch the films are men – most aged between 50 and 70 yers old. So bless you Heleen

Dylan, KTL is a big draw and a retirement dream – so please keep producing. I am enjoying the stuff, well until the end of season 8 and cannot go further. I used to sail in Plymouth, Southampton and Chichester so the south coast films are a trip down memory lane. I would love you to continue. Cheque will be forthcoming!
