Nick Gates – old TV series – those were the days

these films are worth some time. It was a TV series made of the UK TV back in the days of 3 x 4 screens and when every presenter had to have a weird car and a dog.

But they are well made films with a presenter who loves boats. They were for commercial TV - so each one is a fairly precise 23 minutes long

This is about Dylan Winter's Blog, Sailing around Britain.

Great that you have resurrected these. I discovered them again a few months back, and Nick’s work on the Sharpie has been of real help with what I am trying to d to one of my boats. Really good stuff. Ted

I love British television programs about your coast, sailing and in this case even craftmanship! It seems there is a bigger culture in Britain about coastal sailing in beautiful traditional (wooden) boats than in the Netherlands.

Btw, I like Nick Gates car more than your Volkswagens ;-) Certainly, you will get more viewers if you use such a pickup Morris with a wooden boat shape back to transport your duck punt. Maybe you can even beat the bikini girls!

I have owned a morris minor, a ford anglia, several austin 1100’s, and allegro, – these old volkswagons seem to start in the mornings – which is a good start to a relationship.

Bottle screws and blue rope…now, where’s my boiler suit — you know your audience Dylan — a fantastic choice of films. Anne is superb but too much work for the likes of me! Thanks.

The best we got in the states was fixing up old houses , not the same! England does so much better job with this sort of stuff.
And the Yarmouth festival…..definatly puts the us equivelants to same but to be fair the sailing population is so small a % that if it wasn’t for wooden boat magazine and Jon Wilson there would not be wooden boat anything here.
    Looks like some winter viewing……

I am also dissapointed in Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Most of their programs are soaps about rednecks building cars, going fishing or mining gold. Nice to watch a few times, but becomes boring really soon. I think such programs as Nick Gates would make those channels a lot more atractive: a little less cars and more boats and low budget sailing.

Watched them all and enjoyed a lot! Did not know that a ‘Dinghy Cruising Association’ exists (Episode 4). Love to know that there are some fellow dinghy cruisers in Britain. I guess they occur more over there than in The Netherlands.
