Think you’ve upset someone Dylan! At least most of them admitted they didn’t contribute either!

I fear that I am in danger of becoming something of a legend in my own gps track

some parts of the story have become legendary – in that many of the assertions made in the thread are not true – despite every detail of the story of the past 11 years appearing accuratly in my blogs, vlogs and films.

Opinions are built on what some people think they remember of the films and blogs.

I had not really realised that this would happen.

However, two people can read the same book and come out with widely different opinions as to what it is saying to them.

It is also interesting the way different people choose to take offense –

the seagull owners are particularly unforgiving and have long memories.

The Campbells are not best pleased with me

Mobo owners are often willing to express their discontent.

This has been a very interesting experience so far.

meanwhile youtube fills up with ever more sailing based series

Man, that was a roasting !

It’s because of posts like that I stopped visiting forums… it looks like some of the “old guard” have moved on as well.

All that can be said is that you sailed more miles in a day than most of them had sailed in a year…….probably

    All the best,

    Richard

Have you fixed the o/b yet ?

I think it was pretty mild…. water under the bridge. Notice there are few long threads about the successful swimming pig sailing video series. There is very little to say about them except – “wow – swimming pigs”. It is my own fault for offering some raw meat for them to get their teeth into.

An astonishing number of sailors took against me when I dumped the seagull for a cleaner engine… and that was almost a decade ago.

I enjoyed the re-writing of the story of the past 11 years.

One chap seems partiulalry miffed that I live in a house in the south east and has been stalking my house move carefully – which is a tiny bit creepy. he even set up a false email account so that he could post rude stuff on my website…. which is also very, very creepy.

A lot of the more ardent critics are from north of the border. They hated me pointing out that it was their fellow scotsmen who were responsible for the clearances – that does not fit with comfortably with current Nationalist political interpretations of scottish history.

the odd thing is…. no scottish sailors have made a serious attempt at making films about scottish sailing. I am not sure why.

  5. 23 July, 2019 at 11:05 amMark says:

Maybe all the Scottish sailors, having watched the KTL videos of the East Coast Sailing, are down here and not up there?

    There again….

  6. 23 July, 2019 at 11:09 amdylan winter says:

it is hard to beat scotland when it comes to a great place to sail. I am a flat-lander estuary sailor…. creeks….mud….belts of trees….shingle beaches….I love East anglia….

but east anglia is but one tiny slice of te coatline of this miraculous little island.

I have barely touched the west coast and do love that feeling of sailing in new places. Scotland has hundreds of new places to see. I have seen almost everything along the east coast.

    Then there is the temperature

today lerwick is 19 degrees – down here it is due to hit 32. As a celt anything above 20 C is unnecessarily hot.

But those scottish winters are bloody tough – but scotland in winter is even better than scotland in summer

I haven’t been back in there for a while as that forum seems to now be full of a lot of bitter stone throwers. The SCS Facebook group is a much happier and positive place when “attitude” is stamped out before it gets going

  8. 24 July, 2019 at 3:58 pmEuan Mckenzie says:

Politics is a divisive place up here and best avoided as someone will take offence. It’s banned on the SCS forum (I’m guessing) for that reason. Depending on your politics, history is very entwined with some views so again people drag history into politics and get offended again.

Your better sticking to environmental politics by slagging off seagulls.

I guess most of the you tubers don’t drift into politics except perhaps plastic in the oceans.

Can’t see you bending to accommodate them so nothing to worry about keep at it

  9. 24 July, 2019 at 5:30 pmdylan winter says:

history has always been massaged by the politics of the day.

How can you take the politics out of the clearances?

How can anyone talk about scottish history without encountering highland v lowland or protestant v catholic enmities.

Intertwined through all that are the clans.

You are right, I could ignore history …. but that would be crackers on an island such as ours.

We have had quite a few divisive referendi since I started this journey.

As for two strokes – most people have seen the light judging by what I see long this east coast

I’m sure most of us simply enjoyed some great photography, your personal take on things and don’t take your opinions too seriously! Most importantly you have been doing it on a shoestring which might encourage others to take the financial hit and give it a try.

  11. 25 July, 2019 at 8:49 amCharles says:

I don’t agree that politics is the problem. I really appreciate the humorous digs Dylan makes during his brief historical explanations. And I don’t agree about the buying/selling thing — Dylan took over a dead Centaur that was asking a few hundred quid, did it up (with help from blokes) and showed that it sailed well enough to be worth 8k, then shared that with the previous owner. More than fair. There is always a load of advice offered and it’s not physically possible to take all of it, nor probably to acknowledge everyone.

I do agree, though, that the constant moaning about freeloaders and asking for money at the end of each video were grating when they started in earnest. Compare that with Delos that have always simply used the “buy us a beer” line — but no abuse if you don’t. There are plenty of us who would happily buy Dylan a beer, or contribute the equivalent amount. It could have been done more tactfully. I contributed a couple of times, but then the videos were all taken off to his website and so I can’t watch them any more on the TV, so it’s just the others now. I didn’t realise about the Youtube advertising thing, but that could have been explained and funding moved to Patreon or something else, rather than it always feeling like it was my fault for watching the videos.

I have learned a lot from the thread – mostly from the same three people making stuff up….

apparently I am a boomer baby, I have a fat pension and I made over a quarter of a mill when I moved to smaller house further away from London.

All this is news to me

However, you make a good point about youtube.

This is where I am after ten years of dancing to the tune of the mighty and eveer changing google algorithm

You tube free films do not work for me…. not for off centre harbour…. nor for the gentleman canal boater….

I have enough material for one more winter of films – if I do the same thing then that will guarantee next season is the last

if I try something else then there is a chance.

I too spend time on yutube on the big telly and hit the refresh button again and again until the algorithm dishes up something I want comes up.

People, me included, never think of paying for anything on youtube….

Google also tells me where people go after watching one of my films – most poeople go off to a more attractive thumbnail – offered to them by the youtube algorithmn based on how much google will make out of the link. If people watch on the website then they are more likely to chip in some money and also more likely to watch another of my films.

As a film maker I want my films to be watched on a big telly…. but if those views are empty calories and lead people away from KTL then they re of no value to the project…. the views are goodd for google but worse than useless to making films aboout scotland. KTL is doomed like a ship heading for the rocks

    it will die.

As for delos… give us a beer… if you sign up to patreon you get access to unpixillated fiilms of swimming…I could go down that route but both of us would lose some dignity. Do you chip in for any other film makers? Delos, La Vag, Sampson?

the other thing you should know is that I make two versions of every film – one for youtube with a reminder and one for the website – without a reminder.

If you only watch the films on youtube – where no-one pays – you will see the requests for support – they are aa rare as hens teeth on the website – because on there a higher percentage are prepared to chip in and the paypal button is there

If half way though next winter you decide that you have watched enough of Mads never ending fettle, Leo manfully chopping hardwood into ever tinier pieces, pigs swimming or babies on boats being nurtured then there is a small chance that you might pine for films that stretch your mind a little, then you come back to this website… let me hold you dollar while you watch a film, leave a comment and then get your dollar back.

You will still be aable to watch KTL on your big telly but you might have to buy one of these

Don’t let the hoople heads on forums grind you down. Almost any subject on any forum will bring out the worst in some people. I imagine we are similar in age, background and interests. I love your films, real gems. As I posted on YBO, under Impaler, people are too ready to take offence. The Moray Firth series has been a real inspiration to get out on the water more often, I have discussed this series in Lossiemouth with other sailors both English and Scottish and no one has complained. If you’re up here again do get in touch.

water off a duck’s back – the films are the films and willl stand as a record of our coastline in the early 21st century.

Forum posters with a grudge of unknown origin will fade to nothing.

    – but that Sean fella is doing a splendid job of calling the pointy heads out. Strangely enough I met Jumble Duck in Anstruther. He came to find me, shouted in a friendly way at me from the shore so I invited him and his son on board for a nice cup of tea. At some stage since then I obviously upset him in some way. He claims to be a serious academic….but he is certainly good at making stuff up.

perhaps it is time to establish a fact checking service of some sort – maaybe a data base where the whole story has been told.

on this website might be an excellent place to check facts – it is all here –

why would anyone make up stuff when the real story is so complex and interesting and riddled with inconsistencies and inadvisable decisions.

The twists, the turns, the stoppages, the groundings, the poundings, the roundings, the forced sellings, the joyous buying, the creeks, the estuaries, the seas, the firths, the voes, the tidal races, the storm bound harbour days

Surely it is better to attack when armed with public domain facts rather than imaginery things.

    Attack me for the story

this comment is a cracker from wully

I bought his DVDs and enjoyed watching them very much. Followed on watching on YouTube and chipped in as I still enjoyed the very well made and informative videos- until he had a nasty, ill informed anti Scottish rant for virtually all of one of them.
Bumped into him in person briefly and thought he was a good bloke who I’d like to have spent some more time with.

The Internet is a strange place…it does not even come close to giving an indication of what and who someone really is.

Im sad he’s not here anymore.

Dylan , you once asked people why they contributed financially. Well this is exactly the reason I have thrown my two cents in your direction occasionally. When one puts oneself out there in such an open and personal way on this modern internet of ours, you can come up against such unpleasant and vile comments. Some youtubists get plenty of thumbs down and horrible comments, just rudeness in my eyes.
I make my measley contribution not to help finance the project ,rather just as a way of saying thank you for exposing yourself to this sort of public insult and ridicule so that some of us may get to share in fun of the venture. Think of it more like a form of compensation, or appreciation. Im sure you do not have an elephant hide for a skin.

  20. 26 July, 2019 at 8:45 amdylan winter says:

I have been a journo for many years… the only thing that frightens or upsets me is a letter from a lawyer. I had a few while working in news departments – but then you have staff lawyers on your side. The ones at the BBC were wonderful blokes. They loved a fight… but only if the journo they were defending was right.

A few moaning minnies making up stuff on a forum is of little consequence..

.. and the thread occasioanlly takes a turn for the better. Sean, Wully and a few others who have watched the films without taking offence are keen to point out some of the errors and made up stuff on the thread.. It is really only three blokes who hate me. Clearly I occupy a space in their heads which is rather unhelthy for their equanimity. I hope they do not think of me while they are sailing as it could really ruin their enjoyment.

The negative comments started once I crossed the border into scotland. I had lots of comments on youtube (easy to remove) telling me that I was a $%^& for going to scotland and making films about the place when I am not even scottish. They wanted a scottish member of the SNP to make an authorised set of sailing films about Scotland. Maybe a Nationilist film maker will stray south oof the border and make some films about English sailing as soon as he/she has finished making films about his/her home-waters.

I am still focussed on getting a warm boat for cold sailing. Slow progress. Two weeeks ago I came close enough to touch one I had the cash to buy…. but it was being sold by a dishonourable man. That was much more upsetting than a forum post suggesting that I was given two free Centaurs.

Dylan, when I joined the police service in 1963 (yes 1963) an early part of our training was on how to deal with personal abuse from the disaffected. The mantra was that “ Idle and silly remarks are of no consequence and should be disregarded “. This served me well and any name calling just brought to mind the words “ idle and silly remarks” and that did the trick. P.

  22. 26 July, 2019 at 9:33 amPeter Truelove says:

Ooooh I got that wrong…..sorry. “ idle and silly remarks are unworthy of notice and should be disregarded”. That’s better. Sorry.

The difference is that we live in an age when our words are almost immortal. I recorded the magic of the swatchways … for run as I had never recorded a whole book. It seemed like an interesting project.

I did some reading about MG. I am sure that old sailors spent their time considering his merits – and his faults. How he was offered free advice and did not for some strange reason immediatly follow through with the uggestion. I have been offered many suggestions over the years – someone even wanted me to sail one of these

however, it has nowhere for the outboard to go and closing doors in the face of a following sea would seem to be a bit of an advantage when loch sailing.

There are a lot of envious people in the world…and you seem to have a particularly tough crowd over in the UK…apparently those who sail 4KSBs are devious yachtsmen who seek to obfuscate their finances. And the nerve of them, asking people to pay for their enjoyment on BoobTube!

I think they deserve some slack -I am sure that for most people I crossed the line once or twice or thrice.

for a thinking man to have taken a decade slowly sailing around a small island inhabited by small islanders and not pass comment on the behaviour of those who dwell along the edges of our astonishingly crinkly coastline would have required the self control of an angel.

one of the old fellahs – a mobo man popped up, an impecunious bayliner owner, and reminded them about a film I made about mobos – for him that was the giddy limit. He had never chipped in, never has, never will but decided that he would unsubscribe from my youtube videos….not that subscribing or unsubscribing means anything to google or their alogorithm

Rather a nicely written bit of invective I thought. The film went up 8 years ago now – that dislike has festered long and deep.

Well i had to unsubscribe from his YouTube channel.
This was a shame because his bloke next door approach to cheap sailing was exactly what i watch. How ever his relentless abuse to people who didn’t fit in what he felt was normal behaviour was to much. I feel that i would have almost been in a position that should i of met him i’d have shaken his had and said ‘hi Dylan, i one of your biggest freeloaders’ and then had to apologise for owning a motorboat. After all he once made a video specifically filming motorboats cruising along and then abusing them for going about their business.
I have never donated money via patron as i’m just to poor myself but i have bought merchandise from others.

Typical YBW forum, it starts off as as simple innocuous question and ends in a nasty playground squabble, and looking at the posts , normally by the same I’ll informed, self righteous and self congratulating few.

That’s exactly why I stopped going on forums.

As you say, the posts on that forum will pass into oblivion within a very short time, your work will endure.

as you say… it is just a few. I liken it to a pub. Some pubs are inhabited by a few whose fact free opinions are bigger than their brains – they are to be found entering alone, they hang around the bar with other misanthropes, and then leave alone. Lots of other people in the pub quietly chatting but the boorish ones take up more space than they deserve. No probs… and I continue to find forums entertaining and useful.

what’s next is to start running the final few films about my 14 months with Lily M -that is cornwall, the irish sea, Skye and the Clyde. Then it is curtains for the forseeable future. In the meantime I will be saving up for a warm boat for cold sailing. An old bloke saving up looks quite dull.
