A thoroughly enjoyable series of videos. Chipped in.

    thanks G,

I aim to give real sailors an idea of what it would be like to sail the Forth in a small boat – it is a wonderful place to sail. Lots to do and see.

Great mini-series D, I’ve chipped in a wee bit and really looking forward to the Tay now :)

I have to say that I prefer the new sound format but only because I sometimes disagree with Dylan’s choice of music. Not all the time, I hasten to add, but occasionally the music grates to my ears. Nothing wrong with that, I just have different music tastes to Dylan.

With the new format I can turn up the volume and just listen to the sound as recorded.

I should also mention that on non-sailing days, when the wind is too strong or non-existent, I often go down to my boat after work and sit in the cockpit with a cup of tea and just listen to the river so it is something I really enjoy anyway.

I will stick with this for a bit –

One of reasons I use the folkie music is because I like to think that the music could be played on a boat

in the film about reaper I mentioned the importance of music to old sailors 0 and I like ti imagine that The old dance school could re-create their music on Reaper.

PS – your choice of music would be…..

Yes. Thanks D. Very enjoyable series. Cheque in the post. P

  9. 1 October, 2018 at 4:49 pmDave says:

I have always enjoyed your music selections and ‘mixes’. Music usually heightens the film experience so I miss the tunes. If not having music means the films come out I’m all for it!

  10. 1 October, 2018 at 7:44 pmdylan winter says:

    Dave,

did you follow any of the bands up through spotify – which is a miraculous resource.

Making audio match the shots is more time consuming than using music…. however, I felt it was time to tweak the genre a bit

  11. 2 October, 2018 at 12:39 pmMark says:

Mostly the same as yours. But occasionally I find that I disagree with your choice. Like I said, no big deal but it does mean that I prefer the music-free version.

  12. 2 October, 2018 at 3:11 pmJim Legere says:

Another series of quality films Dylan…thanks. I think voice-over sound issues that bugged me in the first couple have largely been mitigated, or perhaps I have become accustomed to a certain reediness. I must say that, while I sensed your enjoyment of the Firth of Forth, as a cruising area it didn’t appeal to me with all the power pylons, noisy bridges, ships’ wakes and old industrial detritus. You have an artist’s eye and manage to frame beauty in the wasteland, but I shall look forward to your sailing films in more pristine waters. Hurry up and find the perfect Fisher!

The pillars at 6:15 are from The Alloa Forth Swing Bridge.

Now you have done The Firth of Forth,
    Here’s The Firth of Fifth…

Very good clip illustrating the many contrasts of the Forth.
Really do appreciate the high quality resolution of the footage.

Brown envelope containing the usual in post.

the ones going up on youtube have the new voice over using a presentation mike

  15. 13 October, 2018 at 8:22 pmNorman Birkett says:

Like the latest ten. Particularly without background music! It’s good to hear the sounds of nature. Are those 2Fishers BK ? The best ones with ‘greenhouses’ seem to be about 30 ft up, but few BK. Good luck. Norman.

  16. 14 October, 2018 at 7:15 pmdylan winter says:

I would like to find a BK one – but they are as are as hens teeth. I shall have to modify my behavior with regards to going aground

Hi Dylan Great set of vidos on the forth, really enjoyed. have chipped in once more. Not all bikini clad young lassies on you tube some are serious try Ran sailing. Swedish couple in Victoria alaska. An interesting journey.

  20. 16 October, 2018 at 10:32 amdylan winter says:

I agree…. I pay honour to their work ethic. My youtube cannie daughter says I have to remind old blokes that you tube will deliver acres of froth and flesh it is less good at delivering the sort of sailing that most of us do – cool northern waters, thin water, well shot scenery. So, KTL apart, what other vloggers have you supported, why did you do it, why did you stop.

Feel free to not answer any of those questions.

This will be an interesting time for the project this winter. The recent run of films went up on the website about two weeks ago – and I have now been releasing them on youtube with a different mix on the voiceover. There is no plea for chip-ins until the very last 20 seconds of the very last film.

I agree about Ran – they are sailing in cold places

    this is Rans patreon page

    https://www.patreon.com/ransailing

    500 patrons at $5

this is their youtube space organised in descending order of hits

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLYd5EnTTwUKhouIkHoqzMw/videos?sort=p&view=0&flow=grid

    they are posting every week

I cannot match them for productivity – my sort of sailing is not exciting enough to make 16 minutes of good material week in week out.

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLYd5EnTTwUKhouIkHoqzMw/videos?sort=p&view=0&flow=grid

I try to make my films contain an element of a “journey in the Mind” as well across a google earth map

I have enjoyed making this recent run of films – the years since I shot them have given me a new perspective on the the material.

thanks for your support BT – which has been pretty long term now.

  21. 17 October, 2018 at 12:29 pmJock Stewart says:

Thanks Dylan, great videos of my home territory. I wished I was there with you, so many stories to tell and local knowledge to share. Hope to catch up with you one day.

  22. 17 October, 2018 at 8:04 pmdylan winter says:

then write them here where others can read them….I am assuming I missed loads of stuff – but I was running out of time/money. I only had six months on your coast – and the small boat keeps me in port when the wind blows hardish.

  23. 18 October, 2018 at 5:52 pmOwen Lees says:

We have enjoyed this latest set of films and are happy to chip in to the common good to try and keep this kind of grassroots sailing documented – now on our second boat (shamefully an AWB) after Dylan’s films of the Solent sucked me into yachting…

  24. 18 October, 2018 at 6:47 pmWill Nelson says:

Another great series of films. Enjoyed seeing parts of the Forth I’d be unlikely to see elsewhere, and I live 10 minutes from Port Edgar. Will chip in towards your future ventures. I’d love to see you explore the Small Isles and the Hebrides.

  25. 19 October, 2018 at 7:30 pmPhil Shatwell says:

    Dylan,
Really enjoyed the peace, the tranquillity and the pace of the film. The Outer Hebrides is our normal sailing ground so this was a different sort of break from seascapes of endless beauty. Really was a shift in pace but hidden from the close by rat race it’s amazing the beauty that lurks around each and every bend in the river.

  26. 19 October, 2018 at 7:42 pmdylan winter says:

we are very lucky men having access to such places. I am looking forward to the sands of the outer Hebrides

    – I love a perfect beach.

Each one an ever changing sculpture and seldom anyone else on it.

The Solway Firth should be interesting too – and the west coast or Ireland

I am not sure when any of this will happen. These treats may have to wait until after a reach retirement age and the pension kicks in.

Assuming the knees and back are still in working order.

In the short term over this coming winter there will be soime films about the area around Plockton and skye – which should appear in January/Feb

The next run of films will be about the Tay

    – slowly and thoughtfully editing them now.

    I dunno Dylan….
You never hear David Attenborough complaining about the competition from cat videos on the internet.

  28. 22 October, 2018 at 9:31 amdylan winter says:

he has seen most of the world already … I am still working on seeing the sands of harris, the geese of Jura, the sligo peninsular, the shannon, the channel islands..

In five years time I will be able to do all these things

    D

  29. 22 October, 2018 at 9:01 pmStephen COMFORT says:

You know when winter is looming- we all buy a tin of varnish and some anti foul and then spend most of our time watching Dylan! You bring a whole new meaning to ‘ winterisation ‘ !! Thanks Dylan.

  30. 24 October, 2018 at 3:59 amRobert C Lord says:

Always enjoy your films. If I was your helper I’d suggest you put in one musical interlude on your more lyrical sequences, like the shoregbird bits, and fill up most of the rest with your great voice overs prattleing on about the history of what we are passing. Our the state of the tide, or what’s for lunch. At least a third with voice over please.

  31. 24 October, 2018 at 9:15 amChristopher says:

If you do get around to the Solway Firth. Plan to spend some time in Maryport. It’s an astonishing place.

  32. 24 October, 2018 at 7:34 pmdylan winter says:

the tay film does have a sequence crying out for music,

  33. 27 October, 2018 at 10:16 pmAlan Ward says:

LIke the latest output. Thanks for an evening’s pleasure. Chipped in of course.
I was 64 when I bought my Fisher – and the last six years passed bloody fast. Don’t delay Dylan.

  34. 27 October, 2018 at 10:57 pmdylan winter says:

I agree, the clock is ticking….I will not delay… as soon as I get enough in the account I will buy one – slowish progress at the moment though. I am hoping that the onset of cold weather will improve things slightly. Getting traction on youtube is proving harder than ever. There are so many wonderful sailing films on the web that competition is really stiff.

  35. 28 October, 2018 at 1:04 amLiz McCafferty says:

Still working through the entire series (so far!). Made a little donation, wish it could be more. I’ve learned so much about the beautiful coastline I hope some day to visit, but I’m also fascinated by your filmmaking and post production. At 62, I’m a new deckhand on our new-to-us 1986 22ft sloop. Even after 4 years, I’m still too distracted by the sights and sounds (mostly around the Charleston SC area) to be trusted at the helm. Fortunately, the captain has enough experience to handle the watch, so I try to capture the images and work at telling the stories aboard “Seanachai”. Keep the posts coming and our wish is for many healthy sailing years ahead!

  36. 28 October, 2018 at 9:39 amdylan winter says:

I hope it does not feel too much like work

  37. 28 October, 2018 at 4:33 pmJohn S. says:

Hi Dylan, We have been away sailing on the west coast of Canada for a couple of months, with limited internet coverage, so haven’t watched any vids in awhile. Loved these vids and look forward to the next bunch. Tapped you.

  38. 30 October, 2018 at 1:41 amLiz McCafferty says:

Ha! No more work than it takes to open a bottle of wine, or push the pause button to refill a glass. Seriously, your labor of love is a pleasure to watch. A couple of episodes produces an evening of conversation and hours of schemes and dreams, not to mention a few ideas for our next video!

  39. 7 November, 2018 at 8:10 pmEuan Mckenzie says:

    Dylan
I moved my boat to Kip a couple of weeks ago for the winter. Opposite my pontoon and along a bit is a nice looking boat called Lily M.

Will she be appearing in film soon? She looked quite lonely and it might cheer her up :)

There’s also a lovely motor sailor called Kelpie that would be ideal for you though she’s not for sale.

Looking forward to the Tay. My parents both hailed from up there so it will be good to see

    Keep at it! Euan

  40. 8 November, 2018 at 6:11 amdylan winter says:

best engine I ever had – worst mainsail I ever had

she will appear in the final few films to be run after christmas

they will cover buying her, sea trials in cornwall, trip up the Irish sea and then that last summer in scotland….

    how is scotland?

Damn I miss your light and mountains.

I confess that it came as a bit of a shock to sell a boat I expected to keep for a few more years.
