Sweet little dinghy

A bloke from the wooden boat forum who goes by the name of Keyhavenpotterer has offered me a sweet looking GRP simulated clinker dinghy for £100

"Oughtred Auk just sold on ebay for £225. Ebay or Apolloduck are worth watching. I have a grp clinker tender spare, almost identical to the auk"

He says this is an old picture so the woodwork is now pretty mankie. However, the hull is sound so I could refit the hull fairly quickly and cheaply.

I reckon a day with a jigsaw, some stainless self driving screws and some epoxy and I could have her fitted out and I could drive her using the Duck Punt Optimist  rig.

She looks beautiful, young and in great condition to me. What do you need jigsaws and epoxy for. I will take her if you don’t.

She has nice lines for towing and for sailing. Congrats.

I like the nice, deep hull, just add a clamp-board for the Honda. Definitely a good candidate for the Optimist rig from the duck punt. No centerboard, but it’s for tender-duty — you’re not dinghy racing. All you want is reasonable forward momentum. You could always glue a false-keel to her GFP keel so she tracks better tiowing or sailing; but I’d wait til Spring and see how she handles over the Winter first on a Fal.

You going to add a simple rudder? Or use the oars like you do on the Dunk Punt? A simpler solution is add a stern oarlock and use on oar as a steering sweep…and brush-up on your sculling technique. Sculling as great method for punting around the docks in tight conditions.

That makes the duck punt a two berth.

I think a false keel might work quite well and will keep the inside clear of shin catchers

and I will initially try steering with an oar.

I reckon a crutch either side of the centre so I can leave the outboard in place and steer from the leeward crutch and scull a bit to get her to tack

as it happens they are real little weight carriers.

two men, a dog, guns and 50 dead birds is the spec

What about a lee board barge style

  13. 1 November, 2015 at 5:48 pmdylan winter says:

I could do that but it would spoil her lines and a barge board really needs a slab side to attach it to. I will try a bolt on keel extension. Nothing too extreme – just a couple of inches on the bottom

    could be…. maybe….

I don’t think lee-boards would work with that-short-of a waterline anyway, and she has a wonderful shape.
