What a damn liberte, not much fraternite or egalite! Better off leaving the smelly boat (or was it the frog?) to his devious devices. So pleased the Passat stood up to it all though. Bon chance….Geoff

the boat would have done fine – it was pretty dry inside. I do not know what he wanted from me. All very odd. Boat is still for sale.

Wild goose chase and a shame for all sorts of reasons. It looks a rather good boat underneath, you were given the run around and now feel badly disposed to the entire French nation (and German sports cars) at a time when having a positive European outlook might be important.
Put the whole thing behind you, it’s not worth the rancour. There are some darned odd people out there, but most of us, including many of my French friends and colleagues are nice and amazingly trustworthy.
    All the best. C

    Refunded as promised

The boat was sound all round save the running rigging. The engine was, of course, an unknown. He said it has only 200 hours on it – but once some-one has lied to you it is hard to believe anything they say.

I have never, ever said that I feel ill disposed to the French nation or all frenchmen, or even all french sailors who drive Audi TTs.

However, as a journalist of 40 years I have dealt with plenty of rogues – nearly every one a Brit. However, most of the people I met during my years as a radio hack were honest truthful people. They were all on tape – good and bad – so I had the pleasure of being able to listen to them again and again as they were edited down in the studio.

As the years went by I came to spot some of the give-aways in intonation, phrasing, hesitation of the Native English speakingrogue. There are also several warning signs that are more visual – an unnecessarily flash car – in this case an inconguity between the boat and the Audi. Audies are about technology, this boat was full of the most outdated electronic gear I have ever seen – which even ten years ago would have been cheap to replace. His shoes were a bit weird for a sailor – not very well chosen for a session climbing around an old boat. The suggestion that I owed him lunch was also a bit unsettling. Jill, who was with me and observing with her better than he thought french did not take to him at all.
All I can say is that you should take it as proof of my openmindedness towards French sailors that I was prepared to undertake a 2000 km round trip on the sayso of a Frenchman and his daughter.

Now here is an odd thing. One of the tells of a rogue is that they say things that are on their mind. His daughter kept on telling me that both she and her father trusted me…. now that is an odd sentiment given I was the one plnning to give them the money. there was something rather Trumpian in their assetions of the faith they placed in me – and that is no more an anti-American sentiment than to say that I would now be much more cautious about buying a boat from anyone who is not a native English speaker. That is a shame all round I think.

If that additonal layer of caution I now feel is in any way upsetting to you I apologise. Other sailing vloggers are available. Not amny of them elderly, intelligent, opinionated Englishmen. There are films on youtube of pigs that swim… an astonishing thing to see I am sure you will agree.
