Oh well done Dylan. A great deal of thought and time went into the making of that video and it was well worth waiting for. Thanks. Oh yes, the bike………………an excellent project which you clearly enjoyed and now you have it up and running I hope it continues to bring you joy. Thanks again for all the laughs. P.

Superb looking bike. Good job. You’re looking trim as well!

I have not eaten bread, potatoes, rice or pasta for five months now

    white wine…. no beer.

Plus rowing every day. I am not sure how things will pan out this winter when it gets too cold and wet to sail or ride the bike.

The bike is bloody amazing to ride…. I feel as though I have the legs of a 20 year old again

watching an old bloke bang his head and drop stuff is always funny

Not sure about the google Italian though. It will be interesting to see how many of the hits come from Italy when I make it public on youtube

Great film Dylan. The Italian narration was a stroke of comic genius. Not sure Signore Campagnolo would have approved, but it suits you to a tee. Congratulazione!

in one cut of the film… now dropped… I talked about derailer gears being the work of the devil while the planetary gears were inspired by an angel

Bellissimo. Very droll, what was the total cost.

  8. 2 November, 2017 at 12:29 amdylan winter says:

the bike was £350… the motor and battery and some tools from Tony were £704, I had to buy a set of BMX brakes – £17 because of the cockup on the back pedal brakes. I should have bought a bike with conventional brakes ratehr than the hub ones. The ferry was £280 but I had been summoned to Amsterdam to pick up a car full of Eleanor’s stuff. I have looked at and ridden other mid drive bikes – they start at around £1800. My plan is to get rid of one of the cars if I can. I will also take the bike with me to scotland next year and use it to explore the islands… assuming I get there.

Thanks for posting that. Funny too. Now you need to make a film of you sitting bolt upright overtaking the racing lycra clad mob up a steep hill and an appropriate comment in Italian.

Superb, D. Laughed my [arse] off. An instant classic!

Watching you assemble the machine–head-bumping, relentless tool dropping, et al–was like watching a video of myself on any number of past projects. Made me feel a little less doltish. Thank you!

    thanks Don,

My best daughter, Eleanor, makes these things for a living…. but at 1.5 minutes long https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGNHS9-4L_I

She told me to leave the stumbles in because people love a pratfall. I must say I was a bit horrified at how often I dropped things.

I wonder if I was always that clumsy or perhaps the film just showed it. The actual project came together so well though… I was amazed. Bit of a cockup on the brakes. The front brake is on the back of the forks, it works fine but I cannot use full right lock without jiggering up the cable.

I really did this to try out lighting a difficult shape in the little studio at the end of the garden where Eleanor and I will be making how-to videos (there is a market for them as opposed to sailing films which now need added mammary glands if they are to be successful. I have five years before the pension kicks in and I can give up making films for money.

I lit it with five worklights from Screwfix. I used blue gels on some of them to get the colour looking the same. One pair of lights was outside so that it would look the same when the sun was shining as when it was dark outside. I can tell which shots are which but I am hoping that it does not show on the film.

The next films she is making is a series about smart phone hacks such as putting magnets on the smart phone case to allow you to attach the phone to a fridge or a tripod. She has clients who pay for the 1 minute films – which she and I can churn out at five a day. It will mean less sailing but it will get me closer to the fisher for scotland – which is the point of it all

Does anyone know any native Italian speakers to see if the translation and pronunciation are funny? I did it all through google translate and tried to reproduce the way google speaks Italian so it must be bloody awful to listen to. I do know that lots of the words are mangled. Google translated wheel spoke as talking so one sentence tells people to attach the sensor to the conversation. Hopefully there are more. I am told that the Italians find us Brits speaking their language outrageously funny – Pompous an inept.

So very good Dylan! I laughed out loud throughout. Tapping you a hundred charges……..

Bravissimo and a good laugh at the same time!

Excellent, all it lacked was a touch of

” fa ta ta fa ta ta schminky pinky boutros boutros ghali” and it would be perfect ..

Also good to see prodigious use of the 1/2″ wobble sprocket and back pedling mudguards.

By the way if you are looking for a new sponsor I have it on good authority that “Pneumatico Gizmo” are keen to invest.

Great video Dylan and well worth the wait, I’m inspired and very impressed with the production.

    All the best.

Ps: all that fresh food , exercise and lack of beer is certainly paying off …….pity about the wind though !

Excellent D! But you ain’t got any hills in Suffolk!

  16. 2 November, 2017 at 8:22 pmdylan winter says:

hills are as nothing to me now.All my riding feels as though it is on the flat. Bloomin marvelous invention.

  17. 3 November, 2017 at 2:20 amDon W. says:

I’m glad you mentioned the lighting. About a third to halfway through the film, I was suddenly struck by how… well, “different” the lighting seemed. Of course, you almost always film outdoors. But I’ve seen dozens of indoor YouTubes, and the lighting here was… different. (The word that actually popped into my head at the time was “professional.” As in, “Wow. That looks like a professional lighting job.”) Didn’t give it much thought after that. Too busy laughing while I watched someone else stagger through a parts assembly project just like I would. And farting all the way! Ha! One of a MOB’s hard-earned pleasures is guilt-free farting as he putters around the shed. Brilliant!

Hope the new video projects pay off handsomely. You’re off to a damn good start.

They can take your youth but they’ll never take your freedom with an E-vicar! Best of luck to you both with the “how to” films but somehow I don’t think you’ll need it — great stuff.

  19. 3 November, 2017 at 11:33 amdylan winter says:

I can also drink ( white wine in moderation) and ride the bike afterwards. I am planning to spend a fair chunk of this winter using it to sneak up on the birds up and down the river….and film the hunters as well while when I encounter them because by the time they have fired off their guns there are no birds hanging around for the second volley.

  20. 3 November, 2017 at 11:39 amdylan winter says:

thanks Don. I painted the inside of the shed white, put three site lights in the shed and one through the window. I used blue gels over them to colour correct. It ended up looking pretty good. I was a bit alarmed at how often I dropped things…. I assume that will get worse as I get older….. but I would still rather be sailing.

Brilliant – and funny. Wishing you many happy miles.

  22. 3 November, 2017 at 8:16 pmJohn McAlinden says:

What a brilliant film, and a surprisingly interesting project. Something I should consider doing myself. I’d need a bike first, mine was taken from the shed last, practically new it was. How do you describe the lads who do that sort of thing? I just can’t remember the word you use. Anyhow, best of luck with it.

Sei un mito Dylan ! troppo spassosa , pronuncia perfetta !

  25. 5 November, 2017 at 5:27 pmdylan winter says:

which google translates as – You’re a Dylan myth! too spicy, perfect pronunciation!

so M, was it incomprehensible nonsense – was it funny to a Native Italian speaker. I noticed that it translated spoke as conversation

Yes Dylan , it means that is funny , the sense is right but some of the mechanicals terms sound a little exotic…very good indeed
